I’m seeing some reports now they the original balloon may have not have been intentionally sent over the US but was blown off course.

This is more reason why shooting first is a bad idea or overreacting to them. Given all the other tensions we have with the PRC we should be extremely careful that a mistake doesn’t end up starting a war.

PRC isn't even close to being ready to go muscle to muscle with the US militarily and they know it. Even with allies like Russia, Iran and N. Korea, all of which are sort of a joke at this point, they couldn't take on the US. We're still a juggernaut an order of magnitude bigger than any other country on earth. It would take all of Europe throwing in with China to threaten us.

Truth is, no one wants to fight. China's economy is utterly dependent on the US and the US would be struggling for a while without China.

Whether the PRC can take on the US doesn’t mean that a mistake couldn’t lead to drumbeats for war here in the US. We saw with this balloon many were talking about it like it was an act of war with wild rhetoric about how it could be carrying missiles or a bio weapon.

Whether the PRC wants to go to war they likely will respond to an attack but even short of that both countries aren’t likely to back down to perceived escalation.

If their **** tier spy balloon was blown off course over the USA they probably got better data than they dreamed of. Too bad for them they lost a balloon, thats how it works when things go off course. **** the PRC and their feelings.

We have no idea of what intel they might’ve gotten and the US also has jamming and signals warfare technology.

this isn’t about being kind to the PRC it’s about recognizing that we have two great militaries with a lot of other tensions. This would call for caution rather than rushing to shoot.

Why? Just let them get whatever intel they want? How much do you want to placate and appease. It doesn't work and never has.

Russia shot down a U2 we didn't invade. Take risks get losses.

"Once the balloon was detected, the U.S. government acted immediately to protect against the collection of sensitive information."

"Currently we assess that this balloon has limited additive value from an intelligence collection perspective. But we are taking steps, nevertheless, to protect against foreign intelligence collection of sensitive information."

"We are also tracking what abilities it could have in gaining insights, and continue to monitor the balloon as it is over the continental United States."

This is one of those cases where the initial response was good, but politics played a part in pushing the administration and the Defense to err on the side of caution, resulting in them taking a much more aggressive stance. Despite this incident seeming to be humorous (F22 against a hobbyist balloon), it's positive that the administration is now taking steps to define how they should react in this largely unregulated area of space. If they do that successfully, they will have essentially gone through an exercise, and those lessons will help defend against actual surveillance objects in this area of space, without overreacting to other objects.

Thats clearly a political statement for a$$ coverage purposes.

Limited added value is still added value. I believe appeasement against aggressors has never ever worked and the reason action was not taken was geopolitical.

I don't think it's political at all. The overreaction to the hobbyist balloons seemed partly politically motivated to me.

If you are referring specifically to the spy balloon from China, waiting a few days to take it down wasn't appeasement; not taking it down at all would be. The administration weighed the option of shooting it down immediately versus waiting, and I thought they did the smart thing in waiting a few days until it was safer to take it down. Additionally, they took advantage of the situation to track its communication and gained insights from it, which were, of course, classified.
