Our electric bill was $110 last month. We've got an oversized central ac unit (a Trane, if I spelled that right), that was designed for a much larger house. We ended up with it because the builder (this was in '94) tried to install a no-name brand before we'd closed, after promising the Trane. Turned out that they'd run out of the smaller units for a house our size. I told them that if they didn't give us one, we'd blow off the deal. All they had was a much larger and more efficient one (ha!), so the damn thing doesn't come on much... freezing us out when it does. It'll last much longer as well.

We have a lot of stuff running frequently during the summer, when we're here and not traveling. I like it cold, and mucho electronics are constantly in use. We use gas for the washer/dryer, stove, hot water heater, which helps. Insulation can't be overstated in importance. While our house isn't large (around 1700 sq. feet), it's much larger than the one we used to have, yet the bills are much smaller. I get more irritated by the water bills, and when I fill up at the pump. Anyway, that's what's happening, energy wise, at Android Central.

Yeah, but everything else costs a buttload in San Diego. What's the average price of a home there? Like $500,000?? :D

No doubt Doc. When you pay out the ass for housing, about the only thing one CAN brag about is the low electricity bil, excellent weather and booze at the grocery store.

So let me get this straight. You just bought a Hummer, but you are freaking out about a $200 electric bill? Not to mention that $200 is a fairly low bill for a 2,200 sq ft house in the peak of Houston summer. My house is 500 sq foot less than yours and my bill was $100 more this month.

Damn, my gf's place, she is living in a 2br/2bath around 1000 sq ft and they only paid $40 this month and paid $45 last month. Then again, they actually do turn on/off their A/C (ex. they turn off the air when they leave the apt.) and I am ALWAYS hot going over there. They are going through TXU.

I'm used to paying about $60/month for an apartment. These past few bills have freaked me out b/c I never knew I would be spending that much per month, especially since I leave the AC on 85 when I'm not home and only on 80 when I am at home.

If I set my AC on the levels many in this thread mention, I'd be paying out the ass per month.

and no ****ing **** your bill is higher than mine. you leave your AC at 75/73...

    Mine is at 85/80.

    WTF?

and what the **** does my car purchase have to do with this thread? i'm not b****ing about gas prices here.

I love the city, but yeah, I'd hate to have to live there, if that makes any sense. ;)

Yeah, but I bet 75 in my house feels like 80 does in yours. The insulation is terrible at my place. If I set my thermostat on anything above 77 i'd be sweating within 10 minutes.

I mentioned your car in reference to you saying you would be out on the streets soon if you kept getting these high bills. Calm down.

I dunno how some of yall keep your houses set to 75 degrees or higher; that's like a damn sauna for me! Most of the rooms in my house are around 70-72, and I keep my bedroom set to 69. Gotta sleep in a cold room.

I don’t have any problem paying the cash to keep me around 70ish in the house, I go crazy when it's hot.. I feel really bad for people that don’t have A/C in Houston and have to sleep in that heat and humidity.. The $200.00 a month is well worth it compared to the 100+ temps outside..
