A couple of points to respond to your post:

This is a matter of public safety. That's precisely where the government should step in. You can't leave this matter to bar owners since they probably fear losing the smokers' business more than the flight of the pissed off non smokers since the non smokers are resigned to accept the smoke, despite the now proven health issues associated with it. Hell, I'm sure a lot of the trendy bars around town have owners who would vote to allow cocaine in their bars. How would that work out?

It would be more fun than your Romper-Room version.

Well it looks like you've had to resort to insults since you've run out of logical arguments.

claiming this to be a matter of public safety is projecting. I'm gonna guess that if there are actual documented cases of someone getting cancer from second hand smoke that its someone who actually lived with a smoker their whole life. you're not gonna get lung cancer hanging out at a bar a few nights a week. I don't care if you don't want to smell like smoke, i'm not a big smoker but I smoke at bars. but complaining about smelling like smoke after you leave a bar is like complaining about smelling like snatch after you leave a strip club.

You're comparing guns to cigarettes? Yeah, I fear all those drive-by puffers.

Heart Disease and Cancer are the top two causes of death in America. Yes, it's logical to make the comparison since the Surgeon General has now linked second hand smoke to both.

Firearms are already banned in most public places.

I stand linked in arms with texxx.

Take it outside. It's worked in other cities, the smokers have accepted it, hell you can say they've even flourished as it' can be a decent way to socialize, bars are better places to be for everybody.

I was initially opposed to it in New York, but I can't argue with the results, which have been excellent.

Can't do that if it's a public health issue. Can't make exceptions for an unsafe working environment.

But i don't see why smoking rooms with big time ventilation aren't an option...

Fast food is a bigger health threat than second-hand smoke. Why don't we ban McDonald's? Btw, I don't smoke, nor do I like being around it.

MEOWGI didn't say the government ought not to ban smoking in "most" public places, he said they shouldn't ban it in all of them.

Did you edit the straw man line because you realized you didn't understand the term? That would be a big step for you.

Because one person's actions don't affect another's against their will. Smokers negatively impact non-smokers' health, as proven by the Surgeon General.

People driving to and from bars are probably a greater threat to public health than second-hand smoke. Perhaps we should ban cars.

I get the public health issue. I guess I just don't understand why, logically, a bartender that smokes needs to be protected from smoke by the government.

I don't see why smoking rooms with big time ventilation aren't allowed either, except that non-smokers hate smokers so much at this point (and I understand that) that they just don't care if we're miserable.

I agree with bigtexxx on something!!

Smoking in Bars and Restaurants has nothing to do with smokers and non-smokers. It was to do with the rights of employees to have a safe work environment. Period. The air quality of a smoky bar is worse that the Lincoln Tunnel at rush hour, and no one would dream of making someone have to breath that. Also if there were some how something similar with CEO's health being at risk we would not even be having this discussion but because it's low paying jobs we have less respect for their health. Also don't start with the old "well if they don't want to work there they don't have to" nonsense. That didn't work for unsafe conditions in coal mines and it doesn't work here.
