I say sit Gawen for as long as necessary, since groin injuries are hard to shake. As far as Sura is concerned, to have him back would be great, as long a he's in shape. I think of having a healthy Sura back in the lineup by January as a bonus...I'm not getting my hopes up, though.

I know it's late/early so my brain may not be working exactly right, but I can't figure out who this "Gawen" person is. I must be missing something. Is it some sort of nickname for Bonzi, or what?

edit: I got it. Gawen DeAngelo "Bonzi" Wells. Sorry, I guess I am just slow. You learn something new everyday, I guess. Hopefully this one counts for yesterday, or today's gonna be boring.

only problem with this theory is that he's had since May to shake it, and it hasnt happened yet, so whats another 2-3 months gonna do other than to hurt the team?

if we're only gonna have him as one year loner, then we need him on the floor.

    Hi all,

First post here, and I'd just like to comment on the Bonzi Wells situation. Like what aussie rockets has said above, he's had 5 months to shake the injury, so if he couldn't get 100% fit in 5 months, how much recovery can he make in the span of a few games?

I'm inclined to think that there's something going on behind the scenes here. Remember, he didn't actually pass the Rockets' physical before they signed him, they just assumed that he would get healthy. This was stated in one of the Chronical articles by JVG IIRC.

Anyway, that and his leave for "personal reasons" just adds up to something suspicious.

My guess is that Wells arrived in camp poorly out of shape, was sat out of practice and told to take the leave to get himself together, which he didn't, that's why they're still sitting him until he gets his weight down. They're not gonna spoonfeed him and bust his behind into shape or something.

Again, that's just my take on things, take it for what it's worth, but him sitting out for so long just seems fishy here.

    That sounds very plausible.

Yeah well, I'm just a pessimist by nature. And after last season's debacle, what with all the hoopla here and everywhere after the DA and Stro signing and subsequent failure...One can't help but feel...let's just say a little reserved. :p

Anyway, we'll see how Bonzi fits in as the season goes on.

Personally, I'm not sure how he'll fit in yet. Other than coming off the bench as a powerhouse 6th man on the team, I'm having doubts about his ability to flourish next to Mac and Yao.

Sounds like surprisingly good news on Bobby. It seemed like once he slowed his game down a tad(with Yao on the floor),Sura became a better player.I'm looking forward to him completing his courageous comeback. If Bob is able to play,he'll look best with our studs on the floor.I really thought he was KO'd.

As already stated,Bonzi will play when JVG decides he's ready...........and he'll kick @$$.

There we already see the rift between bonzi and JVG. JVG is using not giving bonzi play time to punish him not participating in the preseason. While I understand that he is the coach and he needs to be fair to everyone else on the team and establish standards, bonzi is too big part of Rox success to use this on him... Let's just hold our breath that they will get along... I personally don't like JVG at all...

I think it is safe to say and very logical that Bob Sura is injury prone, if it is not his knee it will be his back, ankle, etc. It seems like he has an injury every year of his career. When he played his first season with us he was fortunate and tough enough to play through the pain. I will believe he is ready when I see him playing in a rockets uniform this season. Until then, hold the "I told you so's" until he plays an actual NBA game again. There is a reason he has contemplated retirement and the organization has not penciled him in yet. It has been tough rehabbing and honestly it has been a tough career for him. So please let's not jinx this and hope everything turns out.

this can be very true. there's more to this story. and the way jvg is talking it sounds like bonzi is 100lbs overweight and doesn't know how to shoot. the way bonzi is talking..he doesnt even need practice..

Wells not playing right away is JVG's way of showing Wells who is running the team.

i agree with you, and i feel the same way thanks to DA and stro.

in my mind bonzi isn't on this team. why? because he's not! he's on the payroll, but not on the team yet. when he returns to practice i'll consider it a bonus. until then i'm starting the season with the mindset that he isn't a rocket.

the great thing is how little was invested in him. our offseason was done. the money we used to sign him wasn't going to be spent on anyone else. he didn't prevent us from going after another player.

whatever he add, when he gets back, will be all gravy.

i'm not sure how he fits in with tmac and yao. we already know he's a post player and so is yao. he's a hell of a rebounder and has a decent mid-range game, which would make him (on paper) a nice fit next to yao and tmac is there are 2 other range shooters on the floor.

I tend to think that he is still overweight and out of shape and why risk additional injury to his groin until he slowly works back into shape. Our team is good enough to start the season without him in the lineup, but I guess we will find that out in the next few games.

If we start out losing we may see him a lot sooner. And if we are winning then he can come back slowly anyway.

Probably Bonzi is a little out of shape or out of practice w/ the team. I think it's reasonable to bench him if he has very little practice w/ the rest of the guys. I feel like he might have little of the T.O. attitude: 'I don't need to practice, I've been in the league for so many years, what's the difference?'. The difference is having a smooth game, and not a learning process, in the regular season. I don't need to see errant passes to or from Bonzi because just because it's the first time they've played together.

bonzi needs to get his sh** together, in my eyes he has gone from huge acquisition to a distraction, i really hope he gets back into the swing of things sooner than later, we need him on the court

if sura comes back, how much will he really be able to do? im rooting for the guy, but im not holding my breath
