Here are some more numbers. Whatever loads you have there for .44mag is a total waste of a beautiful cartridge. These are just Remington Factory loads. You can push it much harder if handloaded. The makers of cartridges are more likely to detune velocity information on the higher end...Everything I've independently read and heard indicates the best a 240 grain .44 magnum pistol can do is "approach" 1550 feet per second...Still not enough...
Could you provide a link please? Another thing from a gun magazine:... http://www.gunsandammomag.com/ammunition/fabulous_44_mag/ Despite its legend as a real powerhouse, it's important to understand that the .44 Mag is not really a "powerhouse" in hunting cartridge terms. The "standard" fast factory load uses a 240-grain bullet at 1,350 fps for 971 ft-lbs of energy. This is not a lot of energy at all; even though the bullet weight and larger caliber make a difference, this is just half the energy churned up by the .30-30. Because of its blunt, short bullets, velocity drops quickly, so the .44 Mag is at its best at very close range. Face it, the .44 magnum is a farce in power compared to the tiny little .223...
Still no link to back it up, well I went over to remington's site,...nice gunmaker btw, and I got this:.... http://www.remington.com/products/ammunition/ballistics/results/default.aspx?type=pistol&cal=16 Energy (ft-lbs) Cartridge Type Bullet Muzzle 50 100 Remington® Express™ 180 1036 745 551 UMC® 180 1036 745 551 Remington® Express™ 240 741 623 543 Remington® Express™ 240 741 623 543 Core-Lokt® Hunting 275 931 797 699 Basically, Remington is indicating for example that a 180 grain weight Remington Express .44 magnum gives 1036 foot pounds of energy....The others do less...
I will defer to your knowledge of guns and for the record I am somewhat ambivalent in regard to gun ownership. I don't believe we should outlaw, or that it is Constitutional to outlaw, gun ownership and don't believe concealed and carry will lead to the wild west. OTOH though I don't believe we should be liberalizing gun laws either and am fine with restrictions on the types weapons along with licensing and registration. Getting to the purely Constitutional idea of personal fire arm ownership as a protection of liberty as your post seems to indicate that handguns aren't the ideal weapon to fight off the army with. So while they might be handy against a mugger I doubt they will mean much against ATF officers wearing body armor and driving an APC. IMO the idea of the 2nd Ammendment for personal protection against a tyrannical government is both outdated and from reading the Federalist papers wasn't even what was intended by the Founders. My reading is that while it was an individual right its purpose was for the States to be able to provide for their own defense not dependent on the Fed or even against the Fed. My own interpretation of the 2nd is that while it allows for individuals to own fire arms it doesn't rule out restrictions on the types, usage or registration. I also think that given the differences between states and regions in attitudes towards guns most gun control should be left to the states.
I think we agree a lot on this to a large degree such as the Constitutional significance of the 2nd admendment as a right,...I wish all states would be open to complete gun rights, and I would like to say it would be reasonable for restrictions on types, usage or registration except... I can't... due to the fact existing federal restrictions are enough and reasonable as they are IMO...For states to go beyond the federal restrictions is infringement on reasonable retrictions... As far as ATF or government agents gone bad,...yes handguns are not the best choice to engage the targets, but I'd rather have it as a secondary firearm to fall back on...The best choice is the .223 round which can defeat the body armor, while still being light for carry and travel if SHTF and you have to bug out....
I personally view conceal and carry laws as an admission by governments that, in today's world, the authorities cannot and will not protect you. If somebody breaks into my house, they are very likely to get shot. No pointing and yelling freeze. If somebody breaks in, and I see them, and identify that it is somebody who does not belong there...they are getting shot at. Period.
that's right CaseyH, to split hairs a .44 magnum with a 20 inch barrel length versus a .223 with a 20 inch barrel length has the edge,...but my point was the .223 rifle in it's typical barrel length (14.5" to 20") has more power than the .44 magnum PISTOL... That is what I was talking about...
Why are you rolling your eyes at me? I own a 5.56 I don;t own a 44 rem mag but the rem mag has more power. Just accept it. I am OK with it. Here is some p*rn to make you feel less sad.
If that's yours I'm impressed. I thought I had a good stockpile...No flashsuppressor? Supposedly the accuracy is better without one, but you may want to add a vortex or something to it. Get an ergo grip and trigger job as well... edit: well it looks like you have a hogue grip, as far as the ACOG, that's what I want next... p.s. great choice in .223 ammo...(both of them)
I got that rifle during the ban. Its an Hbar so I won't put any cash into it. I hate HBar. That upper actually just sits around by itself right now. I love my ACOG. If I had it to do over again I would get the 31F instead of the 11B I have. I have a JP trigger on an AR but never touch any trigger on the other rifles. The stock stuff just works to well.
