I don't know...it's been, what, 20 years since we saw any Superman themes on the big screen? It's been too long for me to be tired of them. And I thought they did do some new themes...even though you wanted them and shot one of them down (the kid). To me, it is a mix of old and new. A modern twist with a homage the Superman movie history. I thought it was well done. (If a little long) To be honest, now that they got the setup out of the way, I'm REALLY looking forward to the sequels.
Superson didn't excite me too much, but I'm willing to play along and see what they do with it in the sequels. Here's hoping he's not a ******* clone. At least it wasn't just the same old rehashed origin story that these superhero flicks usually hump. I was actually more interested in what happened to Supes while he was off Earth. When do we get a cool Brainiac story? I thought the action scenes were great. John Williams' theme still owns.
Big screen yes, but with Smallville, Lois and Clark, animated supes, and another superboy show that I vaguely remember, this is still some big time retreaded storylines. Maybe I'm just supered out of the superman ethos/mythology. Of course maybe I'm weird. A couple of years ago when the animated superman made supergirl a non-relative, I started thinking that they would make a better couple than clark/lois. Wait did I post that outloud. (slinks back away from the thread).
i liked the movie a lot. i caught the orignal superman on hbo saturday afternoon and i actually enjoyed the new one more. maybe i'm just spoiled by special effects.
I saw the movie, it wasn't too good. Oh yeah, the saving the plane was cool, but the movie was so slow and focused on the love triangle. Spacey wasn't anything special as Luthor and Parker Posey who I usually enjoy was awful, though a lot of Mols in the old comic books were like her character. I didn't think the chick playing Lois Lane was too hot either. She looked 12 in mommy's clothes. If there was a high point it was Brandon Routte, he was a very good version of the man of steel.
I thought if it weren't for the opening music, the movie might've been pretty bad. The new Superman/Clark Kent had zero personality. It seemed that he rarely even spoke. Also he wasn't bumbling/lovable like Reeve was as Kent. He looked too GQ, when he was supposed to be more of a dork. Of course I hated all the fake CGI crap, but I guess it'll never go away. I have a few questions also but I guess I won't ask them here.
It was kind of the exact opposite for me. I thought Spacey was awesome as Lex and Parker, whom I usually hate, was watchable in this one. Lois might have been a little too young though.
hahahaha i was thinking the same thing when i was watching the film. Hopefully the people that get this joke, have seen the movie already
SPOILERS:SPOILERS: i thought in superman 2 lois and supes talked about how he couldn't be with her as superman? isn't that why he gave up his powers? so the baby must have been consumated that night when he was a human before he turned himself back. brody's theory could still hold true i guess.
Course then you have to deal with why the kid is super, if he was conceived by a humanized clark. And Lois had her memory erased in that movie, so how does she know that she's carrying around Superman's kid. I always hated that memory wipe idea. Way too deus ex machina for my tastes.
I've never been a big fan of Supes but I did grow up the first 2 Reeves movies and loved this movie! I thought Spacey was great as Luthor, he just really had this controled rage thing going on, still the Luthor from Superman 1 and 2 but with more an edge now. Routh was a perfect choice to fill Reeves place as Supes, I think its an awesome superhero flick
Mini-review after seeing it on IMAX last night: Casting: Ranged from mediocre to sad. Like others have said, Clark Kent's character was almost non-existent. He had no charisma and the only reason you knew he was a geek was he wore big glasses and didn't talk much. Lois Lane ... dang guys, you could've found someone more, er, pleasant to look at (Kate's OK, but compared to other superhero movie babes, nuh-uh). Kevin Spacey's a mediocre villain at best. Action: What action? The only fight scene was of Luthor's thugs mugging Superman. We had ONE chance to see Superman kick butt (machine gun scene) and they cut it short! Effects: While it was a little too artificial with all the CG, I still came away mostly impressed. Probably the best part of the movie, and manages to make up for some of the movie's other shortcomings. Storyline: Geez, could've used a little more plot. Character development was awful...they did a better job with Kitty Kowalski than with Clark. WTH? The ending was kinda lame...after a finale that was much less than climactic, they attempt to compensate with a meaningless prolonged Superman flight. Bah. 3D Experience: It was OK, but there weren't enough 3D scenes. The excessive vibration and motion in scenes like the plane scene made the 3D experience a little less enjoyable, and overall it seemed like the depth illusion created wasn't as real as it should've been -- characters seemed to have improportional size at times. I was much more impressed with the 3D trailer previews before the movie. However, the huge IMAX screen definitely makes this an upgrade over standard theater, without even factoring in the 3D scenes. That said...it was still a fairly decent movie. It certainly didn't meet up to expectations, but it's better than most movies that are out these days anyway. Put it this way -- it's definitely much better than Hulk, but it's no Spiderman. So if you're going out to the movies it isn't a bad choice. Meanwhile, I'm looking forward to seeing some of these upcoming 3d animated movies on IMAX...if the trailers are anywhere indicative of what to expect.
Oh, and one more thing: Best movie intro EVAR. (Probably one reason why the rest of the movie was so underwhelming.)
This may sound a bit geeky but even a humanized superman still contains the DNA of superman which may have been suppressed and not removed since his powers are regainable. As for the superkid she seemed pretty surprised at his powers. She probably can't explain it but what other explanation other than that lying SOB of a superman hit it and quit it!!! Man if only I had a memory wipe ability
thought the movie was boring as hell. there were a few bright spots, but it was mostly a Lane/Supe borefest, as usual.
