Try toggling what items appear. The Melee fanatics have a strict item policy to elliminate the random luck factor, the same can probably be done for Brawl.

Personally, I'm glad Nintendo decided to go with the love letter to itself/fanbase instead of making a hardcore fighter. There are other companies who can do that much, much better.

You don't know how many of my hardcore n64 smash friends feel this way, so yo're not alone. But you know what? I actually own the classic controller and I'd say I'm probably better now at this smash than I was with melee/original. It gets taking used to and yeah, I changed my options cause you really don't need the x AND y button to jump. I finished the SSE and now I got all the guys I wanted. I think with the decent amount of time I put into the solo mode and to knock off the rust, I'm ready as ever to play.

I also tried playing online and man I haven't played with anyone anonymous yet. Its VERY dissapointing. But, I'm down to exchange friend codes to play against live ppl from the board. I'll add my # on that .xls sheet and we can get the ball rolling. tired of waiting for that crap multiplayer mode to work.

And as for items, I normally just turn off the hammer off. I'm thinking of turning that final smash thing off too. Hell yes it looks cool ,but it's an automatic KILL if you break it. Whats the point of down smashing/metor smashing someone off a cliff when you hit this floating ball 3 times and just auto kill everyone? NO skill involved.

Do you guys feel this way as well with the final smash?

Yep, not a fan. It's one of the things I had in mind when I said it seems less and less about fighting skill.

As someone mentioned, there is of course the option to turn the items off, but when you're playing a quick match online it's hard to get everyone to agree upon custom stuff so I'm assuming most will just be default matches (all items on).

I hope the controls get more comfortable, but I can't decide what to get used to. Obviously I used the GC controller for Melee, and I didn't like it. So I'm thinking I should try the Wiimote/Nunchuck combo, but when I tried it last night it felt strange. Especially since I use Mario and I recently played Galaxy. I kept shaking the remote to spin lol.

The final smash is an automatic kill but you have to connect first. I've tried it and missed a few times. You can also knock the smash ball out of a person before they activate it but you have to move quickly.

Also with the hammer, you can be killed pretty easily when you grab that too.

The controls can be completely adjusted. So pick up what feels the most comfortable in your hand and mess around with the configurations till you get what's right for you. And it will stay that way under your Profile which is a nice feature.

That being said, the Gamecube controller feels great in my hand. I got into this series during Melee so I'm enjoying it a lot. The WiiMote and Nunchuck combo just doesn't work for me at all and the WiiMote by itself does not either. I have yet to try the Classic Controller. But seriously, I can't see how the Gamecube controller would not be preferred by people. The buttons are the same as Melee and the powerful rumble makes it better during gameplay as well. The attack and jump buttons on the controller are perfect. I really can't see why it would be uncomfortable. ALL my friends use the Gamecube controller and they are Super Smash addicts.

And the Final Smash ball is fun. I love it. Everyone sees it come across the screen and you see everyone make a move for it while fighting each other. And its NOT an automatic kill. You do have to know what your smash is and time it right to be effective. Knocking it out of people is fun too.

i think its a bit funny people talking about the icons and smash taking away the "skill" :D. If youre so skillful stop people before they get it or avoid them when they get it.

but i'm also surprised that someone doesnt like the gamecube controller. It seemed perfect to me and the best controller of the lot. I'm trying the wiimote/nunchuck but it is a bit odd however i dont want to deal with being wired into the console so im going to try and get use to it.

Yeah the wired thing really does suck. That is the only legitimate reason I see as to people who would not use that controller over the other options. I might be a sucker and spend 50 bucks on a wavebird controller. I'll be playing this game for a looong time so its a pretty good investment. I wish the price would have fallen, but its wishful thinking, especially after the Wii came out.

I dont think the WiiMote and Nunchuck combo would work for any real fighter. The thing with it is that my left hand should only be dedicated to the control stick in fighting games. I shouldn't have to press other buttons with that hand, and with smash, you basically have to.

Good luck getting a good one. Everything out there is crummy and Nintendo discontinued the only good one, the Wavebird. They're running about $60 used on ebay, $100 new.

Yo this game is just like Melee besides some extra features not really a huge mega improvement.

Not really, because it's not the button layout that's the problem, but more the way the characters control within the game. From N64 to Gamecube and Wii, the game feels less responsive to me. Might have helped if they added a sensitivity setting. Maybe not.

Alright, let's say the Rockets are playing the Grizzlies and totally dominating them by 25 points with 20 seconds left and the Rockets dribbling out the clock. What if at that moment an orb dropped down from the ceiling randomly, and whoever got to it first, got an extra 30 points? If it happened to land closest to a Grizzlies player, there's a good chance he would get it, and in turn the Grizzlies win.

That's a lot like what might happen in a game of Smash Bros., and it doesn't seem like skill really has anything to do with that. If the Final Smash were at least earned by filling up a meter or dealing out a certain amount of damage, etc., then I wouldn't mind so much. As is it's just a ball that shows up out of nowhere. Obviously others disagree, but that's too random for my taste.

That's not apples to apples, but I have no problem with some equalizer dropping in. It makes the game more fun- it's been in Mario Kart for years with the lightning bolt.

The items have always been a part of the game, though. From the very beginning.

The game plays a lot off chaotic, fast paced battles with a lot happening onscreen. That's part of the fun for a lot of people. Playing with three friends with that craziness is what makes the games unique. And yes, there is some skill involved in chasing down (and keeping other players from) them.

Also, Final Smashes are not necessarily 'auto kills'.

Lol. I agree. I'm just going to turn off final smash to avoid any of it from happening. Luigi's final smash lulls everyone to sleep and he can ping everyone in his circle. Falcon's (if you get the timing right and its not hard, all you gotta do is stand next to the dude) is when he runs you over. Sonic turns into supersonic and flies around killing everything in sight. If that's not an example of an autokill, I don't know what is.
