Oh, hey, let's build a rail so we can pipeline beggars straight to every uptown and River Oaks intersection - sweet!

No when I say skyrocket I mean $300-$400 to fill up a large truck $200 for a car. One day it will happen.

Even though most people think they don't pay for rail or don't even pay for tickets, they're the ones who would benefit the most from it so they can contribute to the economy by getting better jobs and getting to work easier. Do something for someone else, for a change.

Seems like the only useful lightrail, for purposes of the Superbowl, would be a line from the Galleria (vetoed) and a line from the airport (not feasible/planned). The only construction I expect to take place because of the Superbowl will be new hotels and the demolition of the Astrodome.

Typical racist response from many Houstonians. BTW they could already do this on buses already.

Not that I agree with him (and I think he's joking anyway) but how is what he said racist?

Until people in Houston decide it is OK to spend 99% of the metro budget on a solution that services <1% of the population, you'll have roadblocks to expansion of the light rail system.

How is that racist? You sound racist, if you depict a single race as being poor / beggars....and immediately see race / racism in everything.

Houston doesn't have a serious competitor to the Galleria, hasn't had one since the Galleria's inception. Everything else is far. (HoustonPremiumOutlets, Kemah, Galveston). Where else are people going to go? L.A. and NY have multiple hot spots for the athletes to hang out at and for gawkers to chase them.

I'm still unsure as to why Hines or some other big wig developer doesn't swing for the fences to put up a nice mixed use tower with some cache in or near downtown that will offer shopping, dining, hotel and apartment space.

Houston is a great city but it's too damned conservative most of the time. Safe, small buildings with surefire, slow, safe capital returns. I hope that with this winning Super Bowl bid we get some more aggressive developers in action.

Not saying it's the same thing as Galleria...but a helluva lot of NBA athletes and hangers-on were hanging out at CityCentre during All Star Weekend. Kenny Smith hosted his party there. My guess is you'll see that again with the Super Bowl, and then some.

A true transit system would serve a significant portion of the population.

Yeah, someone who stereotypes poor people like that could never be a racist.

Would just calling him an ******* appease you two whiners?

I would love to see expansion of the light rail followed shortly by commuter trains to the suburbs, unfortunately many in Houston are opposed to a mass transit system that would actually work and feel that metro is doing a fine job.

If they did, it wouldn't be done before the Super Bowl comes here.

If they started construction relatively soon the university and uptown lines could be built in time.

every poll i've seen on it suggests voters here want more rail...not less.
