It's a risk worth taking. Marion is going to leave to a team that'll pay him more anyway. KG is KG. A move like this can rejuvenate his career. You know he'll bring his "A" Game every game for the next 2 years. He may very well play his BEST BALL of his career in these next couple years. Acquiring KG for Marion and Barbosa would be a good move for the Suns, not a good move for the Rockets. The Suns, like the Rockets, should try to win a Championship within the next couple years while Nash is doing what he's doing. Pairing him up with KG and (still developing) Stoudemire would give them their best shot at the ring. As a Rockets fan, I don't know what to root for. As an NBA fan, all these big names in trade rumors makes this offseason very interesting!
i agree. if this trade goes down. rockets have no hope. no way they'll be better than phoenix AND SA. That's just too much fire power. We'd need Dream back.
wow, boston also gets something in their favor, i bet minny would get theo ratlif, and fillers. suns better give up barbosa or bell as well. minny gets robbed big time by both teams...
Strange how within the trade discussion no one is reminding us that fastbreaking teams that don't play defense can't win the title.
Am I the only one that doesn't see this helping out the Celtics at all? Why would they get yet another forward and pay all that money for essentially the best role player in the game, a guy that you can't create his own shot and won't carry the team offensively? The Celts would be pretty damn stupid to pull the trigger on this one, and Paul has every right to demand a trade if this one goes through. GET OUT OF BOSTON, PAUL!
Well, Garnett at the 4/5 will give the Suns, for the first time, a legit inside presence on the defensive end. Garnett can run, but he also can play pretty good D. Not to mention that Raja at the 2/3 is a pretty good defender in his own right. This trade -- if it allows the Suns to keep Amare, which I can't fathom how if management is hellbent on cutting their payroll AND adding KG at the same time -- would improve the Suns in all aspects of the game. No matter what they do, Nash is the brain behind that operation, he is the only guy they can't do without.
It wasn't about Garnett. I was being sarcastic. I've always had the opinion that good athletes with some semblance of offensive game are the way to win because longer, taller athletes can play the passing lanes better if they can't do anything else defensively. This in my view contrasts sharply with a roster of offensively challenged players who keep the game close by playing great TEAM defense. I'll take the former. It looks like the Suns would, too.
I still don't think this trade makes the Suns, or anyone, for that matter, better than the Spurs. A stupid Ginobili foul and you're talking about 5 championships in 9 years and 3 in a row, and they may add Grant Hill.
Glad I'm not alone. I don't see Garnett improving the Suns that much. He's incredibly overrated. If it was the Lakers, it would be one thing, but the Suns were already so good that giving up Marion or Stoudemire plus depth in Barbosa for Garnett won't help much when the former two essentially do the same thing as he does. He's not a go to guy or a dominant low post force, so this really adds nothing to the team. Garnett's only advantage is defensively but I don't see what all the fuss is - the Suns didn't lose last year to the Spurs because of defense. They were in position to knock out the Spurs.
I don't really understand why you guys are being so hard on Minnesota for this proposed trade. What else can they do? 1. Garnett is unhappy there and they need to move him for that reason. 2. For his entire career (barring the one good year with Sprewell and Cassell) they've failed to surround him with the players he needs to contend. Nonetheless, Garnett has played his heart out every single game and until the last year or so, he never openly complained. They owe him a chance to contend. If they can't make it happen in Minnesota, they should move him elsewhere. 3. They aren't going to compete with or without Garnett, so at some point they need to blow it up and rebuild. Getting a #5 pick and some young talent from the Celtics (some combination of Gerald Green, Ryan Gomes, Al Jefferson or Kendrick Perkins) is about as good as it's going to get in that regard. Yeah, McHale is a terrible GM, but moving Garnett to a contender is the right thing for them to do - and getting cap relief, draft picks and young talent is the best thing they can do to rebuild. I would say you should get at least two first round picks for Garnett, but if that isn't possible you take what you can get and move on. And yeah, I'm terrified of the idea of the Suns getting Garnett. It surprises me that some of you don't think that team can beat the Spurs. Look at their big threes: Suns would be Nash, Garnett and Stoudemire. Spurs would be Duncan, Parker and Ginobili. Well, Nash is better than Parker. People might give Duncan a slight edge over Garnett, but personally, I think Garnett is better than Duncan. And who among you would trade Amare for Ginobili? As for supporting casts, I'd say the Suns are right there with the Spurs. Guys like Barbosa, Bell, Diaw and James Jones are all nice players. Maybe they don't have an ex all-star vet like Michael Finley coming off their bench, but that's about it. Besides, if they pull this move off they'll have people lined up to take their MLE, and maybe even to split their MLE.
Except according to the report, they won't lose depth. Barbosa isn't rumored to be included in the deal. They have described it as if it's basically a straight up Marion for Garnett deal from the Suns point of view. If you don't see how that vastly improves the Suns, I don't know what to say.
Agree also, losing Marion (one of the best athletes and all-around players in the game) and Barbosa (one of the fastest and best bench players in the game) probably won't be worth it just to give Nash his twin towers... One thing is for sure though, they're gonna be losing A LOT of 3s...
That will actually help them in the playoffs where possessions count more. As for defensive, name one guy that plays D on the wolves right now besides Garnett. The guy is like a one man zone at times. I think a Marion for KG swap guarantees at least one championship in the next 2 years for the Suns. They also get ATL's 1st pick unprotected next year.
There whole game is based on speed. You take away the three and put two post players in the lineup, it negates what Nash does well--which is get the ball to an open shooter as fast as he can. Of course everyone would say "Oh but there will be double teams". But there wouldn't be a CRUCIAL need to double team since Phoenix kills you on their perimeter shooting and not by their post play. Nash is great at improvisations with the ball and can create a shot if he's trapped but you can't depend on him to keep doing that...especially if he's going to sit anywhere from 10-14 minutes a game. I rather see the Suns deal away Amare to Atlanta. This way, you aren't losing much on the points/rebounds department but you also keep a perimeter threat (which Amare is not).
are you serious? KG and amare are more face the basket within 15 feet post players. and deal amare so you don't lose perimeter play? what? why would you keep a perimeter player over a post player? amare is a great rebounder, just under 10 RPG. (more than yao) add that with the best rebounder in the game and they are stacked for rebounding imagine those 2 crashing the offensive board after a jumpshot. as for losing the running game... KG and amare are both good ballhandlers for 7 footers don't see how it effects it at all. like someone mentioned earlier it'll help them in the postseason when possessions are more valuable.
