Since all FA signings possibly have an impact on who the Rockets sign, it should be obvious.

but it's been 'verbally agreed' upon. unless cuban coughs up the same contract or more, nash is as good as gone.

but i don't think the Mavs are in a world of hurt. They still have marquis daniels to sign...and he's not going to get anything even remotely near 13 mil/year.

even though this is a blow to their team, it's not something (i think) that will be too detrimental. they still have dirk, daniels (if resigned), and josh howard. maybe finley too if they don't trade him.

Nash is an excellent signing. He is one of the top three pure PGs in NBA and should have three-four good years left. Suns will make playoff this year and Mavs could be out.

I think it IS significant. Daniels is nice and so is Harris. But neither has the chemistry with Dirk and Finley that Nash did. That is important. Additionally neither of them has the Playoff EXPERIENCE that Nash does. They are changing quarterbacks here on a team that relies on a quarterback. I think it is important.

    Dallas takes a step back.

Daniels is a wonderful, wonderful player, especially at clutch time, but he is not naturally a PG. Josh Howard is pretty good too. I wish the Rox are as good at finding gems.

I won't be surprised the Mavs will get a couple foreign guys this off season on the cheap. They scout so much overseas.

a step back but i don't think it's a step into the lottery. if they trade away finley and walker and do not get a player like Shaq in return, then yes, they are surely lottery bound.

Either way, it'll be nice to take the season series against them next year.

Oh, I agree they are not a lottery team. But as it stands RIGHT NOW, they are not in the top 4 teams in the West. Sacramento, Minnesota and San Antonio are the top 3. Remains to be seen where the Lakers go. But I think the Mavs drop back to the pack of the lower seeds in the west playoff race.

Dirk, Daniels, Harris and Howard seem to be their future. Stack and Walker are bloated contracts and Finley is solid but over paid.

Dallas has their work cut out for them.

    Interesting.

This decision means the Suns think they're close. Just need a PG to run the show, and they think they're contenders.

I'm not so sure. That'd team would be a contender in the East. But they're really lacking a dominant post player. Stoudamire has to get mor range before I think of him as more than "good." Marion is electric, but not a real go-to guy. Johnson can score. As can most 2's.

They'll be fun, but I'm not sure they'll be all that good.

well..it was a nice little run by the mavericks the past 3-4 years. now if they trade away finley, dirk will DEFINITELY be in trouble. he'll have to take all the last second/clutch/game winning shots now

No way they'll be able to trade away Finley's contract.

Well, Dallas did take Devin Harris in the draft, so I think they were somewhat prepared to lose Steve Nash.

Harris most likely will not be as much of an impact as Steve Nash, but he should be servicable his rookie year.

Yeah, it pretty much is a headscratcher on why the Suns gave Nash all that money after trading Marbury and his huge contract.

    It's improbable, not impossible.

But I think Fin's not going anywhere unless Dallas gets a 4 or 5 in return.

Steve Nash was the engine of the dallas mavericks. They are indeed hurting.

It depends on their defense to be contenders. Nash plays little defense.

One good thing, this gets rid of one of Barry's biggest suitors. Phoenix was going to go hard after Brent Barry.

I'm sorry, Daniels and others aren't going to fill the hole that Nash would leave. There is a chance though that Dallas could re-acquire Nick Van Exel though.

First, Nash will make $17 million when he is 35 years old. $17 million! He depends heavily on his quickness for his game. Unlike Stockton who was never super fast, Nash relies on that speed and it will decline over the next few years.

Second, the Suns have the same problems they always have. Aside from Stoudamire, they have no defensive stoppers. Johnson is a solid if not spectacular defender. Marion should be a good defender, but he just has never been that great as a defensive player. Ok, but nothing special. Nash is not a good defender. So, as usual, the Suns will be fun to watch, but will be a paper tiger because they can't play D.

They also have no big man. Is Jake Tsakalidas supposed to strike fear into anyone? Like they always have, they'll continue to run a string of big dumpy white guys in there (Schayes, Klein, Voshkul, etc) and hope they can do the job.

They'll be exciting, but without the great defensive presence or the solid, tough big man, they aren't going to seriously contend.

Woo hoo!!! Steve Nash goes from a potential top 4 seed in the West to a team that will battle it out for one of the coveted 6th thru 8th spots. Works for me
