Do you honestly believe that cheap shades have the same quality as designer shades? This is coming from someone who doesn't even wear sunglasses bc it gives me headaches. In other words, I'm not saying that Gucci shades are worth $200 but they're definitely much higher in quality that dollar store shades. Anyway, how about these Oakleys? Spoiler They're only Spoiler $1500
Yes you're right as some Gucci shades are just plastic frames and you can buy them online for $100-$150. Metal frames are more expensive and better in quality. Lenses in cheap sunglasses tend to pop out fairly quick and the normal wear and tear is more drastic of course. It's just like paying for better frames when you're buying eye glasses. You can buy $50 frames or you can buy $200 frames. The same thing goes for lenses. Thinner lenses are much more.
I don't know, man. I buy designer knockoffs at the mall for about $15 a pop. They last me well at least half a year, and if something happens to them I just go get another pair. I figure at this rate it'll take me at least 7 years to spend $200+ on sunglasses, and all that while I'd be looking just as good as the guy who decided to plunk it all down now for the nice designer name. And frankly, even if you're one of the 0.5% of people that actually care what designer brand my sunglasses are, I don't give a crap about your opinion, so there. My money is better spent on much cooler things.
Pretty much, yeah. I get your point as well, but with 99% of those hyper-expensive, name-brand shades, you're just paying for the name. There is virtually zero justification in paying hundreds of dollars for the part you actually see out of or buying into some fiction that they'll last forever, cuz that just ain't true. What you need is UV protection and polarization. If you want to pay hundreds for some indestructo-super-metallo-hyperplastic that is 99.9999% marketing crap, well, be my guest. Rx glasses are another story, but OP's assertion that this "isn't a fashion thread" and then immediately posts $200 Oaks is just silly.
i love Maui Jims, personally. Just great quality all around and protection. Costa Del Mar's are also great quality.
This is spot-on. Shades are somewhat like basketball shoes. Company A makes a certain shoe for $10 and sells it for $50. Company B makes a better looking shoe which costs them $20 and sells it for $150. It's up to consumer to figure out what is in their best interest. More times than not, the second shoe will be more comfortable and last slightly longer. http://www.articlesbase.com/fashion...er-than-cheap-generic-sunglasses-2140764.html
I still don't know why people need sunglasses to drive. They act as if they're going to go blind in sunlight. When did the "gotta have shades when I drive" movement start? I can understand when you're out and about, I guess. P.S. -- this is coming from a guy who's never owned a pair. lol.
As an optician for the past 5 years I find it laughable that people think cheap sunglasses hold their own against others like Oakley, Ray Ban or Maui Jims. In terms of cost on frame, most frames are made in China and the quality doesn't vary much, if at all. Of course there are those cheap $3-$5 glasses that will fall apart on you in a couple of weeks but the build quality on a $30 pair of Guess glasses you find at TJ Maxx are on par with the $300 Gucci ones. Now in term of lenses... YES you can find VERY cheap polarized lenses and they, are in fact, polarized lenses but the durability is night and day. Most cheap polarized lenses has the polarization filter coated on top of the lens without any secondary coating on top to prevent scratching or warpage. That's why it's cheap--it'll do the job but you'll end up paying for another pair months down the road. In terms of polarized lenses, in my personal experience, the pair of sunglasses that are worth every penny are Maui Jim. The clarity and contrast are the best you can get. As for Ray Bans, the advantage of some Ray Bans is that they have an anti-glare coating on the back to prevent incoming glare (Maui's has this as well) but the real gems are the polarized Ray Bans with the anti glare. Oakleys are pretty good and holds up VERY well but, in terms of optics, it's the weakest out of the three. Even its polarized lens isn't all that great. In terms of cost, you do get what you pay for but I can also see why people don't want to spend "more than $15" since you'll probably lose them. I, myself, have lost about 4 pairs of sunglasses in the past 5 years. But in terms of protecting your eyes from UV Rays (if you can't afford polarized lens please at least get a pair that has a UV coating that blocks out UVA and UVB) thereby decreasing your chances of having worse problems later.
driving with shades is relaxing and every reflection doesn't cause you to squint. some people just have no common sense lol
I agree with a lot of what you're saying. There are times its nice to have them, but if they we're a hassle and not considered "cool", few people would wear them. Nothing says "douchebag" more than wearing those ugly Oakleys and wearing sunglasses when its overcast.
I'm not really one for paying tons of money for sunglasses, usually no more than $30 or so. If you're looking at those Oakley's, here are some that are very similar for $120: Link There was a deal on there for some $35 Oakley's a couple of weeks ago, but it looks like it has ended. Pugs
what's so hard to understand that the sun can damage your eyes? As for driving, why not limit glare? I do agree that there is a strong population that wear them for the cool factor (most "designer" pair really offer very little protection) but a quality pair of sun glasses can help prevent damage and actually improve your vision quality.
