well, you have to think from the other side. what are yall expecting when making these criticisms? did yall think chinese would all agree with you? i don't think anyone likes to be critized, cerntainly not yall, not us. without all these unwanted criticisms, a lot things will be fixed quitely. however, when too much and REPEATED criticism occurs, people turn to be rebellious and do not bother to fix these. so that's what i think.

Again, I think those of us who are critical aren't criticing the Chinese people...we're criticizing the government. Just as we're critical of our own government.

You should read my post again. I went out of my way to point out that we criticize our own government constantly. Not only here, but on the street, in cafes, in bars, on the phone, anywhere we feel like it. Our government, even by its supporters, gets criticized A LOT! :)

That is not the problem I was talking about, but feel free to criticize our government. And thanks for the civil reply.

well, it's natural that when criticizing own government, it's easier for people to accept. criticizing another government, it's a LOT harder to accept. personally, i do not believe in criticizing another government because i usually do not have in-person experience. without actually experiencing certain things for a long time, it's baseless to make criticism. that's my view. only people who have experienced it for a long time, have the rights or knowledge to make the right choice. of course, catastrophic events, like nazi and evil japanese in WWII are exceptions due to the nature of the problem. i usually do not criticize anyone, not US, due to I think only americans know what the real problems are in US. foreigners usually don't have the complete picture. same thing for china.

I think his addiction to CF formed a love-hate relationship that led him to ban himself.

It happens all the time on the net.

So he apologized. Good. I just wish he'd done it before things went that far. Better still, that he hadn't said those things to mc mark. People tend to forget that we have lives in "the real world," beyond ClutchFans, and that life can affect what we do here. I know that has happened to me, in the past. You're upset or angry about something totally unrelated to the BBS, someone says something, and you just get really angry. That's when it's better to back away from the keyboard. Sometimes easier said than done.

We should all remember that Clutch has his own life outside of what he does for us here. I hope he never forgets how much we appreciate it. I also hope NewYorker finds whatever peace he's looking for.

And tinman, I don't know where you found Clutch's post, but thanks for letting us see it. :)

edit: Leave it to me to look in the wrong thread! ;)

Interesting view, but I don't think that's how the U.S. or the world should operate.

"In Germany they came first for the Communists, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Communist. Then they came for the Jews, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a trade unionist. Then they came for the Catholics, and I didn't speak up because I was a Protestant. Then they came for me, and by that time no one was left to speak up.”

    This world needs more discourse.

well, i think everything requires a bit of balance. in balance, there is harmony in the world. (chinese cosmology :D) anything too extreme breaks down the balance thus the world in chaos. (daoism, ying and yang)... that's why we are seeing the polar ends of thoughts in this thread. people are balancing each other out.

Do you still have that function? What you described is exactly how I remembered it ... but it doesn't exist for me anymore.

Actually I think lots of criticisms of Chinese policies are perfectly fine. A lot of Chinese are as critical and resentful of their government as people from the west. No one here is saying that the Chinese policies are perfect, I'm just saying that some of them are not as bad as some of you make them out to be.

Why do you always work in binary systems? Nobody said that China was always totally right, or your information was always totally wrong. Most Chinese posters here have been living outside of China for a very long period of time, and they have been exposed to information that's not available in China. Don't you think they might have a more balanced view on issues regarding China?

As I said, I'm probably more critical of the Chinese government than most of you are, as I have a lot more experience about its bad policies than most of you do. You will not find me defending any Chinese policies that are being rightfully criticized. However, any proper discussion must require information from different perspectives. An one-sided discussion is sometimes called "bashing".

If that's how you feel, maybe this should be the end of our discussion.

Verifyably untrue. The following examples come from the first six pages of this thread. I'm sure there are more in however many remain, but I stopped at this point because I think your statement has been sufficently disproven.

I completely believe the DL wants slaves instead of book deals... He met with Mao when was 15 or so and didn't have much real power. That post was commie garbage.

The reason I bumped that post was because I saw no one responded to it and there just hasn't being enough discusssions around what the Tibetan system prior PRC taking over.

I think the Western world overly romaticize what pre-PRC Tibet was and buying into DL current persona. However, if the Tibetan system was intact today, it's theology based society might drew similar criticism as backwards and stone-agish as some of the middle-eastern countries, perhaps even more. As I've posted before, more discourse is the best way to expose truths. What today's Tibet would look like without PRC's control is something I feel that is typically glossed over when any debate about Tibet happens.
