Superman -B- not bad but I was hoping for more....also how could not have the opening credits in 3D??? (imax version) X3-B-Hoped it as longer crammed too much in a short time it didnt flow as well as the first two A Scanner Darkly -B+- average story but it was a uniquely shot movie and the irony of using the cast they did was great Nacho Libre -B+- Great comedy movie I felt some weird spot but I was pleased with the movie World Trade Center -C- I dont know I was moved at the beginning with the original footage from 5 years ago stirred some old memories, but the movie didnt really move me the way everyone else said they were. Maybe i've been desentitized from it all. The Film is not yet rated -B+- Good documentary on how movies are rated. Very eye opening would recommend to anyone who appreciates films. Little Miss Sunshine -A++- Best movie I've seen this year. Da Vinci Code-B- Great soundtrack, long movie but its not too bad. Worth watching once.
I only saw 3 movies in the theater this summer(unless you count screenings of The Godfather and Wrath of Khan at the Alamo Drafthouse): X-Men 3 - Not as bad as the advance buzz made it out to be. It did try to cram too much into a short running time, but so did the first movie and no one b****ed about that. I didn't like how the scenes before and after the end credits undermined a couple of major events in the movie though. - C+ Superman Returns - A major disappointment. Unlike X-Men 3, everyone who'd seen it in advance was remarking how great it was. I went to the midnight showing only to witness an inferior rehash of Donner's original film. Kate Bosworth was badly miscast as Lois, and the movie was way too long. - C Little Miss Sunshine - Cute little flick, although the pageant scenes really creeped me out(which was the intended effect apparently). I don't think it's the Oscar-worthy picture some people are making it out to be, but I really grew to like that family over the course of 100 minutes and I wouldn't mind seeing another one of their adventures. - B+ I meant to catch M:I-III and I even had a free ticket, but it expired before I got a chance to use it. No biggie. I've got the HD-DVD preordered. I'm also a diehard Shyamalan fan, so I'll see Lady In the Water at some point. And Michael Mann is a great writer/director, so I'll probably blind buy Miami Vice on HD-DVD when it comes out in the fall.
MI 3 - Good action flick. Nothing great, but it's not like that's to be expected. B Poseidon - ditto to the above. It's a remake, but interesting and better done, so eh. B X3 - horrible movie. Took everything that was good about the previous movies and shat on them. Takes more than special effects to make a good movie. F Nacho Libre - boring. Fell asleep then walked out. F Click - Was not expecting this gem. Previews were very deceptive. B+ Superman Returns - wasn't really looking forward to this movie, heard the good buzz so I checked it out ... pretty much a remake of the 1st, and the 1st was boring ass. F Pirates of the Caribbean - I really don't see why people find this movie appealing. F Lady in the Water - don't like M. Knight movies, saw a lot of bad press for the movie, checked it out on a whim, and whamo, I surprisingly see quality. B+ Snakes on a plane - Yes, there were some hilarious moments, but too far and few between. C all in all, pretty weak summer for movies.
written by Thomas Lennon (Jim Dangle) and Robert Ben Garant (Travis Junior); directed by Bob Odenkirk... this has classic comedy potential. i can't wait!
I don't see many movies, the ones I did I will probably post spoilers on. Almost all these other people talked me into going to see. Superman Retuns - Eh, it was Superman. Twist was stupid, Luther was dumb, building a new continent didn't really strike me as amazing, didn't like them changing the phrase to "life, liberty, and all that stuff." Grade: PWWA Nacho Libre - Dumb, but pretty much what I expected. Went with a group of people despite the fact that I had no desire to see it. Laughed more at the people I was with cracking up at stupid things than the movie itself. Grade: DWWA X-Men 3 - Ok. Mutants everywhere. I agree with others on the length, and didn't like Storm being the person to take over. Wish I could have seen the film that they had on script before Halle Berry forced them to rewrite it. If I want to watch an X-Men movie, I'll watch the 2nd one again. Grade: DWWA Over The Hedge - Some amusing parts, though often I found myself bored during this movie. The laser pointer scene was the only part I really liked, though I did find Steve Carrell's character wanting to call the hedge "Steve" amusing. Grade: DWWA The Breakup - If Vince Vaughn's in it, I'll watch. Sadly, probably liked this better than anything else I saw over the summer. Grade: MWA World Trade Center - Didn't really want to see this movie either, but again was talked into it. I thought it was worth seeing, but I don't need anything to remind me what happened on 9/11. Grade: WMBWWA Grading Scale: DWWA - Definately Wouldn't Watch Again PWWA - Probably Wouldn't Watch Again MWA - Might Watch Again WMBWWA - Worthwhile Movie, But Wouldn't Watch Again Movies from the past six to eight months that I didn't see that I wanted to: Pirates, Clerks 2, Lucky Number Slevin, Inside Man
PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MAN'S CHEST - Good fun B YOU, ME AND DUPREE - Crap flick D CLERKS II - great flick funny as hell A MY SUPER EX-GIRLFRIEND - don't know why but thought it was really funny A MIAMI VICE - Good Mann flick B+ TALLADEGA NIGHTS: THE BALLAD OF RICKY BOBBY - made me forgive Will for Bewitched and Kicking and Screaming thank you baby Jesus- A WORLD TRADE CENTER - well made unbiased sentimental flick - B LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE - Probably the best of the summer - A+ SNAKES ON A PLANE - 2nd funniest movie I saw this summer, loved it! - B BEERFEST - Like Dodgeball with Beer - B Superman Returns - thought it was great even if it was a rehash of the 70's flick- A- Nacho Libre - thought the movie was funny but thought it'd be better without Jack Black - B- Cars - Good Pixar flick not great - B The Omen - a waste of a remake - D THE BREAK-UP - craptastic movie, massive let down - D X-men Last Stand - over crowded last flick with no heart - C- The Da Vinci Code - slow moving and at times just silly and boring movie - C+ Poseidon - worst movie of the summer, totally worthless remake - D- Mission Impossible 3 - shocked how much I enjoyed this movie - B-
MI:III ... A (JJ Abrams was a perfect fit for this franchise; a lot better than 2 and on par with the first) X Men: The Last Stand ... F (Absolutely horrible; it had it's moments I'll admit but almost every chracter was treated poorly and storylines that should have deserved their own movies were rushed; effects were so-so and wire work was pretty noticeable) District B13 ... B+ (a fun little action movie with great stunts that would have earned an A if it had one more battle royale at the end with the bad guys) Cars ... B+ (definitely exceeeded my expectations; you don't have to be a fan of nascar to love this movie as it's not really about that; still falls short of other Pixar classics but definitely not their weakest) Superman Returns ... A- (Exceeded my expectations; I thought it was a great restart to the francishe so long as they up the ante in the next one; Brandon Routh was a great choice for the man of steel; the action scenes were thrilling) POTC: Dead Man's Chest ... Inc (I WILL give it an A depending on how 3 turns out since storylines will be resolved in the final chapter; great performances, great actions; a lot of fun; a perfect summer flick) Monster House ... A- (I went in expecting Goonies and that's what I got; it's a great kid's adventure and the animation was what Polar Express SHOULD have been; featured a loaded cast) Little Miss Sunshine ... A (this movie is outstanding and the best dramedy this year by far; superb performances all around) Talledega Nights ... A- (another winner; Will Ferrel has put together some good films as of late and Stranger than Fiction looks to be his Truman Show; and it had NASCAR, ableit unrealistic NASCAR; Steve Carell was missed in this one though) World Trade Center ... B+ (This was a great movie, but I wasn't quite as moved as I though I'd be, maybe because it focused soley on two survivors and their families and not of the overall rescue efforts; very respectful to the events) Other movies I wanted to see... Crank, The Descent, Lady in the Water (was curious how bad it was as I usually like his work), Nacho Libre (guess I avoided the dissapointment), The Lake House (I'm a sucker for romance and the plot was intriguing), Who Killed the Electric Car? Movies I avoided like the plague... Crossover (0% at rottentomatoes, enough said), Beerfest (looks a far cry from Super Troopers glory), Snakes on a Plane (refused to buy into the hype), Zoom, Barnyard (another stupid animal movie), John Tucker Must Die (another stupid teen movie), The Ant Bully (Antz clone), Little Man (the Wayans Bros should not make movies), Click (I've grown tired of Adam Sandler's movies; they don't seem that funny or original anymore), Garfield 2 (shouldn't have been a Garfield 1), The Break Up (didn't look funny). Others I was gonna see but avoided after horrible reviews (Poseidon and Da Vinci Code) Films I'm looking forward to... The Protector, Gridiron Gang (it actually doesn't look too Hollywood), The Last Kiss (it's got Zach Braff), Flyboys (does look a little cheesy, but seems entertaining and I love war movies), Fearless, The Departed (it is looking better but I doubt it will be as good as Infernal Affairs), Flags of our Fathers, Saw 3, Babel, Stranger than Fiction, Casino Royale, Happy Feet, The Fountain, Apocalypto, The Pursuit of Happiness (if you haven't seen this trailer watch it), Rocky Balboa.
Tom Yum Goong (The Protector) will be the best action movie you will see this year. Saw this a couple months ago as it was released overseas earlier in the year and it blows any Hollywood action movie out the water. The fight scenes are one of the best I've ever seen in a movie. I been telling people that in terms of Action movies, Asian Cinema is easily putting out better quality flicks than Hollywood. Nobody believes me but after this movie, lots of folks will change their minds.
I don't go see many movies but I did go see x-men. Ill give it a c+ My wife walked out of World Trade Center so I will give it an F for her. She said it sucked. I want to go see Snakes but I have to be drunk to do so. I'm looking forward to Jackass 2 and Rocky 6.
Over the Hedge- Not awful, had quite a few entertaining moments B+ X-men 3- Some good moments stuck between some really awful ones. Could have been better, but this is all you have this year in terms of Marvel movie. I can't wait until Marvel starts producing its own films instead of this licensed Fox garbage, i am so sick of them passing along C grade material and ruining characters that I love (Daredevil, x-men 1-3, elektra). Going to the premier with all the marvel people made the experience more interesting. C+ Devil Wears Prada- GF dragged me, was actually pretty good. What was extra funny was that the theatre was packed (I sneaked in with a nacho libre ticket) and I was sitting next to this HUGE (not fat, buff) 250 lb black guy who was alone and he had this deep laugh and was laughing his ass off throughout the movie. A- A Scanner Darkly- this movie was crap, the whole thing was slow, the different production style was a gimmick, the acting was trash, the plot predictable and did not see the appeal at all. D Superman Blows his wad- acting awful, costumes crap, had some good action scenes, but was way too long, plot and action was shallow and pedantic and lacked creativity. Makes me rethink the argument that Singer would have made a better X3. This makes me think that he had more help than thought for the first X-men movies. READ YOUR SOURCE MATERIAL, SINGER! I don't read DC but I know that Superman can't lift an island made of kryptonite. C- Little Miss Sunshine- you fall in love with the characters instantly and it keeps you immersed, possibly the best movie i saw all summer. A Talledega Nights- A typical Will Ferrell movie, but I think what makes his movies funny is he always manages to get a great supporting cast. So many funny moments, especially when they are using a second knife to pry out the first one. Hilarious stuff. A Looking forward to: Borat, Farce of the Penguins, Happy Feet,
Actually I felt this was one of the few actual nods to the comics; it seemed pretty much Donner movie based other than that. Holy crap, I actually forgot I saw this movie. I guess that says a lot. Though Hudson was in her underwear a lot it seemed, so I'll allow it.
Some early fall movies I am looking forward to... The Black Dahlia - Great book, and a good cast for the movie Hollywoodland - Interesting topic. I remember seeing the old Superman shows on Saturday mornings as a kid. The Prestige - probably bad, but for some reason I want to see it. Infamous - Another film about Capote. If it is anywhere close to being as good as Capote, then I will enjoy it. There are some others I am interested in for sure, but these are the ones I can recall at the moment.
