My general takeaway is he is just not good enough to be an on ball player. I wasn't really impressed by much of anything he was able to do aside from the shooting. His shot selection is beyond ridiculous, like, Steph Curry level shot selection. I think most NBA players would shoot 0% from 3 with the types of shots Reed takes. Also I can't imagine Ime allows him to play defense like that, gambling for steals on literally every single possession is going to get coached out of him real quick, or he won't even see the court. On the plus side, I do think he's a great shooting talent. If he can benefit from playing with all our other good players, and is only expected to make easy shots, I do think he can shoot a really high percentage.
In both of his summer league years, nobody on the opposing team gave a care about Jabari. His first year, he missed wide-open shot after wide-open shot. His second year, he hit most of the wide-open shots. With Reed, when he had success, the other team was gunning for him the following game. Unless Reed again displays the mental block of not shooting when open, I think he'll be fine on offense. On the other end, I dunno.
People who already didn’t like Reed are just looking for any reason to say ‘I told you so’ or ‘he’s a bust.’ It’s like people forgot how he looked starting in the NBA against quality teams trying to win like OkC and the Clippers. We’ve seen it’s a lot different when he’s playing with real nba players. These games all the defensive attention is on him so he has to deal with all of the pressure and create for himself and for others. This wasn’t a great game for him but it will be good film work to look back on and learn from his mistakes, but he doesn’t need to prove that he belongs in the nba because he’s already done that.
Does this look like the same grace, love, and support given to Reed Sheppard? All of these posts were written by fans in NOV 2021, which was Jalen's rookie year as opposed to Reed's 2nd year. I took out the names in respect to the posters since it's not about calling them out. But this was what was written a few games into his rookie year.
Reed just isn't the good shooter you all expect him to be. You can easily tell if a player is a good shooter in one or two games. Take a look at Koby Brea from the suns, that's what a good shooter should be like.
I think it's by design for him to take as many shots as he can. His biggest knock last season was that he's timid. I am pretty sure the coaching staff specifically told him to be extremely aggressive. That and the fact that he is pretty much a one-man offense with this team.
I root for this kid as long as he is here but I am not emotionally invested ever again in those kids as some are. There is more to life than just love and hate. Stone coming up with hidden ultimatums is just wrong....some dudes need more time though, then why didn't you draft Castle?
Reed can't be efficient because everyone else on the team suck and can't score play defense worth ish. He just needs to get his confidence up and be ready to ball out when the season starts.
This. If anyone think Ime is going to put shackles on his team by giving developmental minutes to Sheppard, they're dreaming. Ime and the front office are on a mission to get to the finals THIS season, and any minutes Reed gets he'll have to hold his own on defense. Udoka wants guys on the court who will execute his vision. Reed needs to step it up when training camp starts. If he doesn't deliver pretty quickly, I wouldn't be shocked to see him packaged with someone else at the deadline in return for a proven veteran guard. Hopefully, he'll turn the corner early and live up to his lofty draft slot. Now that we've got KD, we could definitely use 3-point shooter who may be streaky, but is lights-out when he's on.
Havent seen the game but it is disappointing to read that Reed didnt play well...I expect him to get at least 15-20 minutes this year behind Fred...
We need to be on the phone with Detroit seeing if we can trade Reed for Ron Holland who absolutely schooled him yesterday. The announcer ,who everyone hates, was right that Reed is a major liability on defense right now. Tom Crean was a very successful division 1 coach at Marquette. He may be a bad announcer, but he knows what he’s talking about. Reed has elite 3 point skill and will have to be used in select situations where defense isn’t the objective.
Stone needs to be better too! On a side note did anyone catch the coach’s rolling eyes when Reed was trying to teach Dante how to box out for rebounds? Reed needs to learn his game (especially defense) before telling others how to do it.
Reed plays good church boy basketball and that’s not bad but he needs to have a switch and be mean, play with real fire and passion at some points of the game. Im just not sure he was raised that way, he may just not have it in him. It sucks that he’s playing down to his potential.
In the NBA it’s increasingly difficult to get open shots compared to summer league play. Reed’s shots will be more difficult not less regardless if KD is on your team or not. Yes a player like prime Harden could create catch and shoot opportunities but it was because of how insane his isolation play was to create double teams. Next season teams are going to play lock down defense on us so this whole notion that Reed will just be left wide open to me is a misunderstanding of modern day NBA defense and shotmaking. Not saying Reed won’t have a good season but let’s not just assume it’s going to get easier for him to be as effective as we need him to be to provide the offense we need, and not have to make another deal to bring in back court help.
