He's going to get some clock in the regular season for sure. Adelman will use him in matchups against specific lineups.

Damn Dorsey is a BEAST on the boards. He said he wanted to lead summer league in rebounds and he is doing just that.

Dorsey is more of a physical presense than I thought. For his frame, he has an upper body similar to Dwight Howard. Although he is around 6'8, with his long arms I think he can be an effective rebounder, shot blocker, and banger inside. In the first 3 games of SL, I haven't seen him make good decisions when he gets a pass on the low block. His shots look awkward. If he gets minutes this year, I hope the guards don't pass him the ball. Tell him to get rebounds and put backs.

UNC swagger like Rashad McCants, Sean May, and Felton from that championship year? Or UNC swagger like Vince Carter, Antawn Jamison, Rasheed Wallace, and Jerry Stackhouse from the 90's? Sounds like a bunch of selfish gunners to me.

UCLA is pretty good for NBA talent, UA too, but if you really want the king of it all, the answer is...Wake Forest HAHA. You try and beat Duncan + Paul.

Wow, The Rocket's record in the summer leagues that past 3 to 4 years have been awesome. If I remember right, They only lost 1 or 2 games during that stretch. If They can only carry that record in the regular season then.... :D

The Rockets will be so lucky if He can even play half as good as Barkley. Keeping my fingers crossed that He would at least give quality minutes as a back up center.

    Vegas: Budinger Shows Promise

By: Bill Ingram Last Updated: 7/12/09 4:11 PM ET | 2198 times read

Chase Budinger was a far cry from being a headline-grabber on draft night, even when the Houston Rockets acquired his rights from the Detroit Pistons, who chose him with the 44th over pick in the 2009 NBA Draft. His first game of summer league was fairly non-descript, as well, with the Arizona product recording just 11 points and five rebounds in Houston's 75-69 win over the Golden State Warriors. When the Rockets' second game turned into a horse race with the Dallas Mavericks, however, Budinger really stood out.

"I think the up and down pace of the game helped me," Budinger told HOOPSWORLD after pouring in a team-high 25 points on 9-10 shooting in a 98-95 win. "That's been my style all my life, so any time we're running it's to my advantage."

It wasn't unheard of for Budinger to fill the nets at Arizona, where he averaged 15.6 points as a freshman, 17.1 as a sophomore and 18.0 as a junior. His weakness was always the defensive end of the floor, which is what the Rockets want to see him improve on while competing in the Las Vegas Summer League.

"The biggest thing the coaches have told me to do is to play hard, play tight on my man defensively all the way up the floor, and value every minute I get out on the court."

Rockets head coach Rick Adelman expects more than just scoring from his rotation players. If you don't bring it on both ends of the floor, you won't see the floor at all - a message that's already been conveyed to Budinger.

"I've been learning a lot, and that's the biggest thing. Any time you can learn from veteran players and coaches it's a great situation and that's what I've had for the last couple of weeks with the Rockets. I definitely feel like I'm already getting better."

Normally, Budinger probably would expect to play much in his rookie season. After all, a team featuring Yao Ming and Tracy McGrady that just pushed the eventual-champion Los Angeles Lakers to seven games in the second round was expecting to be a legit title contender. Unfortunately, injuries to both Yao and McGrady are likely to make 2009-10 a difficult season, but might also provide Budinger with an opportunity to play a major role for the team.

"I definitely feel like I fit in with the Rockets," said Budinger. "The up-tempo style is something I'm comfortable with and I feel I can really help this team. Injuries might let me play more, but I can't take that for granted. I'm just doing whatever the coaches ask of me."

For now, he's focused on earning minutes in Vegas, and while he scored a ton of points in the Rockets' second game he didn't collect the rebounds he did as Arizona, where he averaged better than five, and he didn't help the defensive cause much at all. On the plus side, he clearly understands those areas of weakness.

"I have to get better defensively, try to rebound the ball more, and keep running the floor."

If he can do those things, he has a chance to be an impact player for the Rockets next season.

My Rockets Summer League POWER RANKINGS:

    (after 3 games)

    1. Dorsey
    2. Budinger
    3. Luenan
    4. Conroy
    5. White
    6. Taylor

Not a lot of changes made to this list since game two. newley and temple are off the list. with only two games left they would have to be really impressive in both games to get a camp invite. White jumps over taylor who seems to be a big fan of rafer's FG%.

the top 4: dorsey is the reason the team is winning. he dominates the boards and blocks shots. the rockets will need this without yao or deke. budinger cuts, passes, and shoots at a high %. he, like joey, can earn minutes this year. luenan and conroy just play their positions well. good decisions without many mistakes. unfortunately, they're not really dominating fringe nba players which may hurt their case for a spot to play against real nba players.

    thoughts?
