The biggest knock against him coming into the league was that he wouldn't attack the basket in traffic, but if the lane was open, he would drive.

He attacks, but he doesn't do anything but make a straight line to the basket regardless if anyone is in his way.

    Does that make sense?

Sometimes, if he would step sideways, or around he would still be AT the rim, but he doesn't seem to have that little wiggle etc.

Crap so I missed the game. Can someone give a recap/review of each (important) player?

Is there going to be replay of this? (that's FREE-ie Justin?)

    James White turrible.
I don't the board's obsession with this clown.
He makes Von Wafer look like Larry damned Bird, IQ wise.

The Hayes - Dorsey comparisons confuse me. The only thing I see in common is the fact that they are both undersized for center/PF position.

But their games are completely different.

Hayes is a savvy vet who hustles and plays great defense (mostly low post but is an underrated perimeter defender). Hayes is not a great athlete, but has more functional strength and BB IQ.

Dorsey provides different strengths IMO. Dorsey is short, but much longer and more explosive than Hayes (altho less consistent & less humble). Dorsey (w/his 7 ft reach & athleticism) is/will be a prolific shot blocker, which Hayes will never be. Dorsey should be better cleaning up the offensive boards w/his crazy hops.

Both can also run and are limited offensively (Hayes moreso IMO), but they have more differences than things in common IMO.

Let's not judge by one game. You have to remember Von was playing with smart vet on the Rockets team that make him look better.

White has length , this dude is long he can play better D than Wafer.

Where the hell is Taylor I don't recall seeing him at all.

Not lower than Anthony Randolph. No one really impressed me with their basketball IQ this afternoon. To be honest, Steph Curry made a few very nice passes in the open court, and he seemed confident in his jump shot even though it wasn't falling for him. I was fairly impressed with his game.

Agreed, Dorsey and Hayes are nothing alike. Just because Dorsey crashes the boards doesn't mean he's a clone of Chuck. Chuck has a solid court awareness, and he knows his role, but he's limited athletically. I've never even seen Chuck dunk a basketball in-game.

Obviously you don't watch all the Rockets games then. :) He's done it at least once each season he's been in Houston.

Aaron Brooks had a pretty awful Summer League last year, despite having a good one before his rookie season. Funny how that correlated inversely with his actual in-season performance.

Carl Landry too had a bad SL showing before his rookie year.

Mike Harris had a great SL the past two years. His shooting percentages made it look as though the league was JV to him.

Based on the past two years' results, I'd say that statistics are pretty worthless as far as the summer league goes, and even the eyeball test comes into question. There's just so much bad decision-making and pointless attempts by fringe players to demonstrate their ability to make an impact. Either that or you have one NBA-caliber player on each team trying to work on their game and just absolutely dominating the ball and preventing others from getting into any sort of a rhythm, like Anthony Randolph did today. Other SL standouts of this sort have been JJ Redick and Desagana Diop.

My takeaway from Game 1, as worthless as it might be? There really aren't any talents on our team beyond the ones we already have rights to. White is clearly the best athlete out there followed by Dorsey, and Leunen and Newley have the most sense, but I wouldn't count out Budinger either. His mistakes today are easy to correct and don't present a problem long-term. On one play down the court in transition he handled the ball nicely and passed it off just like a young Brent Barry would have. I think he makes the team.

Despite all his bball IQ problems, we might be facing a situation where Dorsey is defaulted into the backup C spot. Based on his growth curve including his Memphis years though, I don't know if he'll ever be intelligent enough to put it together. He's just a brute plain and simple.

No one should take any of these summer league games seriously. JL3 absolutely dominated in this setting, earned an NBA contract and did nothing afterward. Meanwhile, Landry absolutely stunk in the summer league, almost had to go to Europe, and then bust out the gates in his rookie year. The summer league is indicative of nothing, it's just fun place to watch new players.

Bayless rocked the SL last year, and he is still rotting on the Portland bench.

our boy Chase Budinger missed a wide open layup... he showed his talent..played soft and nervous..

Budinger is showing his talent. But not enough toughness. He needs to slow down and finish inside.

    Ahh missed the game

I was eager to see Jermaine Taylor! where was he? something happened?

He was touted as the one who can create his own shot, and we badly need one. Really wanted him to play and show us his skills

Chuck is limited in terms of vertical atheleticism, he has great horizontal atheleticism for someone his size. I would say its almost elite level given how well he covers perimeter guys on pick n rolls.
