Summer 2016 Is Shaping Up to Be a Hectic Free Agency Period...for Coaches

Firing McHale and making a guarantee that Bickerstaff would be the coach for the rest of the season seemed like a classic "change for the sake of change" move at the time, but it's shaping up to have the Rockets in contention for one of the best coaching free agency classes of all time.

All of these big names are on the market, and with teams firing some solid coaches this season, the list continues to grow:

    Tom Thibodeau
    David Blatt
    Lionel Hollins
    Jeff Hornacek (yuck)
Several more that were already on the market this past summer

I wasn't really behind the move at first, but just looking around, it seems like this is one of the best years to be in the market for a new coach. Even better, the Rockets will likely be one of the top destinations for a free agent coach this summer. Factor in the potential for hiring a specific coach with the primary intent of wooing a certain player this offseason, and it looks like running with JBB as an interim coach might end up being worth it in the long run.

What do you guys think? Is this another one of Morey's long cons, or did the Rockets arrive at their current coaching situation out of sheer desperation?

There's no way Morey forecasted the other firings so we can rule the long con out right there

I only see one big free agent there. Thibs is the best available.

Blatt could be good but he's unproven at this point.

No, if it was Morey doing this then that would speak more ill of him than any good. It means he thought it was cool just wasting years under McHale.

It's just a coincidence and also coaching turnover in the NBA is pretty high. Great coaches are fired every year. There was this long running thing of guys winning coach of the year and being fired.

A lot of coaches on the market but also a lot of teams competing for coaching talent too. I wouldn't just assume Thibs is coming to Houston. Nets are going to make a big push as well.

If Clippers dont play the conference finals, Rivers could be fired. He would be the ideal coach for Harden. Apart from a very good coach overall.

There will be at least two probably four fired by the end of the season. Byron, Mitchell, Gentry and Whittman. And who knows about Lue too.
And Rockets, Nets and Suns dont' have proper coaches either. Could be 1/3 of the league looking for new coaches very soon.

    Agree.

I'd interview most of their staff: Chip Engelland, Becky Hammon, Ettore Messina, Ime Udoka

Of course it starts with star buy in. If not, doesn't matter what Spurs coach you hire.

If we hired Becky Hammond the league and media would finally be on our side.
