I know what you mean. It is easy to miss things in these threads sometimes. Especially when you are wanting to get to the replies, easy to read through the first article pretty fast.
It definitely happens in other countries. I have very little basis to make judgements on whether it happens here or elsewhere to a agreater degree.
You're right. Link to the study for anyone interested She also has an older paper studying the discrepency in wages among blacks with different skin tones.
invisible fan... thanks for the link. I hadn't yet seen the study, so I appreciate the link. I was going to try and see if it was online later. Obviously, like I've already said, the fact that I went to Vandy as an econ major makes me interested in work being produced there, but also I'm interested in this because it is interesting stuff. She produces some interesting work and is highly regarded. It was a big hire when Vanderbilt hired Hersch and Viscusi http://www.vanderbilt.edu/alumni/email/InBrief/2006Spring/viscusi_hersch_faculty.html This also includes some more background on her if you are interested in the type of things she researches http://law.vanderbilt.edu/faculty/faculty-detail/index.aspx?faculty_id=173
I looked at the study and it looks like multiple things were controlled for and everything. I'm certainly not an expert, but looks well done.
