I think population density alone is why public transportation isn't popular now.
Compare our pop. density to cities with good public transportation (or at least a more abundant supply of public transportation). We're nowhere near then.

It's not by choice for many of us. This is a sprawling city with horrible public transportation so driving is our only option. Hopefully alternatives will emerge as the inner loop densifies.

Houston is too developed....I don't know where we're going to fit in a public transportation. Also, no one going to be biking in the Houston heat.

I'm glad we're all prideful for the city of Houston, but let stop bragging about it so people will stop moving here. I can't bear the traffic anymore...

There are other cities with similar population density building big rail systems

    Dallas
    Salt Lake City
    Phoenix
    Denver

I think you're right and wrong. Both types of societies have built and are expanding systems, but it does seem at this time the authoritarian regimes are making an effort to catch up.

Only if you live way out of the city, or in a low income neighborhood.

Houston people don't like to walk or drive. That's why they are the most obese city in the US.

Don't care, I'll drive for the price/size of my new house. No where else can my money go so far with the same economic opportunities.

the "me too" strategy isn't compelling unless it's proven to be worthwhile for HOUSTON

I live in the Heights AND work in the Heights. I still drive to and from work, because it is faster. Why bike for 30 min when I could drive for 5 min?

That is just human nature now. Fast Fast Fast.

Just hope that something worse then 9/11 doesn't happen one day and cause gas to spike $10 plus a gallon.

Have you heard the expression "best practice?". If everybody took your approach, we'd still be living in caves. Public transportation isn't a new idea.

I have a 3 mile commute to work. It takes me 13-18 min to drive (with lights and factoring the parking garage). It takes me 16-20 min to bike. So I save about 5 minutes by driving. I try to bike as much as I can as 5 minutes is trivial. I feel much better at work after a 15 min bike ride and I didn't have to yell at that guy for turning left from the right lane without signaling.

    As an aside, I fully disagree that "fast" is now human nature. Humans are biologically programmed for over 10,000+ years plus as hunters/gatherers. The "fast" culture is about 2 generations old. A person can maintain a fast pace for a while but it catches up for most people. Fast is not human nature. ;) {...as I get up at 4am with coffee to get some work done}
