They shouldn't have gotten in trouble at all if they were just wearing those t-shirts.

If they got in trouble for wearing bandannas when it's against school policy, or taunting anyone, or saying inflammatory remarks (that's the thing, you never get the full story), then i think the action was justified.

If the school is going to send home certain students because they think they are sending offensive messages through their clothing, they should be consistent and force all students to wear uniforms.

LOL at the people saying whats wrong with showing american pride.

Theres NOTHING wrong with it, but im pretty sure this kid wore it just to piss off mexicans and I bet he never wore the shirt to school before yesterday.

this is probably true, but the thing is its well within the kids' rights to do so.

Its a douche move, everyone knows it but they are playing within the rules with the tshirts.

Its like being up 40 in a basketball game with a few minutes left and still playing your starters and extending the lead...its not illegal but its just a douche move

I agree. I am convinced these kids were intending to be D-bags on Cinco De Mayo but this was a ridiculous overreaction on the part of the other kids and the school to threaten them with suspension.

What has happened now is these kids are getting and going to get a lot more attention than if they had just been ignored.

it is comical that its actually taken that serious. But the kids that were "offended" probably dont know any better.

Does this mean you can't wear another country's flag on July 4th? Would be interesting to see how it would have been presented if the reverse had happened.

You are completely right. This is America. You have the right to wear whatever you want or write anyway you please. But when done just to antagonize people then it's just dumb. Like you antagonizing my eyes with your disregard for punctuation. Or the use of spelling damn it that way. But it's America so preach on.

The first amendment concern here is a bit of a red herring.

WHen you're in school, you can be punished for actions that are perfectly legal otherwise (talkiing out of turn, dress code violation, e.g.) but edges in to the realm of "being a giant disruptive douche" on a subjective basis.

how is wearing an american flag shirt in america deliberately s***ing on mexican national pride? i dont see how wearing an american flag shirt has any bearing on mexican-americans wanting to celebrate cinco de mayo. to me, the issue is why they would find some kid wearing an american flag shirt to be so offensive.

i believe the deal is you cant wear something made out of a flag, but its perfectly fine to wear clothes w/ an image of the flag on it. or if you are a 'real american', a lapel pin!

    i agree.

Not sure why people are saying wearing the shirts was a douche move. I think its perfectly fine. I wouldda sent em home for wearing bandannas on the other hand because they probably looked like fools.

Ya'll are also forgetting the current environment we are facing with the whole Arizona racial profiling law. I think if it wasn't for the Arizona controversy, it would not have been as big an issue. And clearly, those kids were looking to make a statement and piss people off. Just because you are part Mexican, doesn't mean you can't be racist against Mexicans.
