This is exactly why minorities get stereotyped as dumbasses. Sometime, I wonder why it is even a stereotype and not a fact.

That sounds just as stupid doesn't it.

I was on a party planning committee and someone threw out the suggestion of a ghetto Mardi Gras. It got shot down more so for the fear of getting in trouble than being racist or making fun of poor people.

Wow, some white folks just never fail to amaze me. And yall wonder why you get a bad rep for being racist? It's because of dumbasses like these. I don't think I've seen any other race thrown a party where the theme was the sterotype of white people? That party was a noose and a couple hoods away from being a KKK gathering.

Sad thing is that some of them are probably so insensitive that they don't even think they are being racist. Seriously, this is one of those things that only white people would do. I know it's a harsh thing to say, but I doubt the Hispanics, Blacks and Asians throw race themed parties.

how you cant realize that saying this:

"Wow, some white folks just never fail to amaze me. And yall wonder why you get a bad rep for being racist? It's because of dumbasses like these."

is exactly like saying something like:

"all black people are on welfare."

    is beyond me.

That was NOT a good joke. MINE, I mean.

A dude I know said that he was in the same Fraternity at a chapter in his university, and he got out when he found out they were going to do this at the campus where he was. He said that it was idiotic and a cause for him to leave. He also said, and I agreed with him, that taking pictures and leaving them available just made it easy for everyone else to see how stupid these kids were.

Good idea, and in no way, shape or form reinforcing any negative racial stereotypes. And the "white trash" term is very much in keeping with Dr. King's ideals as well.

Hell, I'm black and I want that suit. Not a lot of pinstripe, three-piecers at the K&G Superstore or Burlington Crap Factory.

If these guys in this separate scenario are part of a Greek organization (that framed picture behind them leads me to think it is), which entails both a loose affiliation with the University and the influence of a broad social network, then I can see how a college or student body would consider this an actionable "offense," which in turn actually "justifies" it's exposure. Using the Omega Psi Phi t-shirts is a pretty bad idea, as well.

I also think the terms off-campus and private party, while very accurate and relevant in a legal context, is a bit disingenuous: the parties were "promoted" before the fact (presumably via invitations, word-of-mouth, or fliers) and after the fact (via the web posting) in as public as setting as possible, with the stereotypical imagery in tow. The reinforcement, promotion or acceptance of these ideas or notions becomes social currency in an already stressful environment.

But to the same extent that the University, or institutions therein, feels the need to reprimand or publicly censure the party-goers' behavior; "offended" black students and black-centric organizations should be just as prepared to immediately thereafter forgive and reconcile with the white students for the sake of campus cohesiveness.

My question to you is why are white people ALWAYS involved in racist incidents like this? Honestly, I really am just asking?

Yeah, I guess they were trying to be like longhorns throwing eggs at their MLK statue on campus or any other jackasses at the majority of other universitys. Don't be so damn ignorant and myopic.

They're not and you're being quite racist on here with quotes like that. Not all racists are white and not all whites are racists.

As a minority I don't see how this is such a big deal. It's getting more attention now than if nobody said anything about it. Why can't we as a society just learn to let some things roll off our back.

If I'm out and someone calls me a "wetback" or "beaner" or whatever why should I care? If an "illegal immigration" party gets thrown and people show up dressed as hispanics or whatever why should I let that bother me? I know who I am and what I'm not so why should I let what someone else thinks about me have any effect on me?

We're becoming way too wussyfied as a country.

For the record... again to clarify...

I do not condone anything in these pictures.

I do feel some of the kids in the Texas party may not have had... listen closely... good enough upbringing to know better.

    That is the sad part.

    The parents.

ALSO... in my household (even when I was growing up -because my mom's family was from Florida, and God-fearing) TO THIS DAY we will NEVER buy "Aunt Jemima" syrup simply because it puts a stereotypical image in the home's pantry.

Listen America... if you're comfortable enough with racial stereotyping to place it in your home, on your breakfast tables, across the country... don't be freaked out when idiots act like it is the accepted norm.

My thoughts are that these "kids" should be getting this attention, because they appear to have never been told this is NOT ACCEPTABLE.

I in no way have condoned any of this activity.

Not in my house... not in my college.

Any level of comfort with racial stereotyping is a wrong level of comfort. At some point of comfort with it, you may be likely to stretch your limits. And that can lead to rampant insensitivity toward others.

Seriously. Holding to any company that ascribes to these images as simple "traditonal marketing" or "company image" really, IMHO, shows your lack of understanding that YOU are keeping the stereotype in place.

Congrats, you syrup lovers (Log Cabin or Karo or Griffin's or Ms. Butterworth have been out all along). People really need to be outraged on a more base level, or these things will continue to be "accepted" as "harmless."

Just remember, any time a young, impressionable mind sits down at a table for years on end seeing a racially insensitive image at home... it is acceptable and condoned in their mind.

    Think about it.

And on the other hand, every "white trash" or "trailer park" reference in here is equally as narrow-minded, assumptive, and shallow. :(

Speaking of Aunt Jemima... this is one of their first ads run on the syrup.

"On the old plantation, Aunt Jemima refused to reveal to a soul the secret of those light fragrant pancakes which she baked for her master and his guests. Only once, long after her master's death did Aunt Jemima reveal her recipe. It's still a secret." - wikipedia
