I don't really understand the racial stereotype of the guy in the suit...or even more perplexing, the guy in the suit and sweater (over the right shoulder of the pregnant club girl).

The black people on campus need to retaliate by having a white themed party on George Washington day. They can dress up as accountants and others can pretend to be emo rockers. It would be kinda cool seeing an emo black guy. They can all drink wine, and play Pictionary all night long.

They'll have one dude dress as normal in order to be the white guy who thinks he's black.

i know it's hard to say where the line should be drawn, but you and RM95's ideas are trying to make fun of horrible things that have happened to people. i don't see how dressing like a stereotypical rapper is even close to the same thing. being rappers isn't some horrible part of black history. in fact, it seems to be making fun of successful people using their stereotypical blinged out image. like someone dressing like a hardcore white nerd or something. i've only seen the pictures posted on here, but none of it seems to be over the line. now dressing up like KKK dudes would be making fun of something horrible from black history, but i haven't seen any of that in the pictures.

their only crime, as someone else mentioned, seems to be being really ugly.

I don't get all of this commotion. From the pictures that I saw it looked like a bunch of r****ded looking white kids(with 1 lone Asian gal) who got together to have a good time over some fried chicken, some 40oz and some maple syrup.

    What's wrong with that? :D

So, a party composed of all white people in Texas are dressing like what they consider to be stereotypical black people on MLK day and you don't see any cause for alarm? You do know that they are wearing shirts that say "I love chicken" and wearing Aunt Jemima costumes and dressing up like gangstas at a party on MLK day right? Yet, you say they are "making fun of successful people?! Are you for real? Only mocking "something horrible from history" is considered racist? Dude, here's the test: dress up like one of these people at the party and go over to a black friends house on MLK day and see how they react.

Agreed. Given the circumstances, if you think these people were strictly trying to imitate rappers you're incredibly naive. Racism doesn't have to be obvious like a lynching. It could be someone at this party saying something tame like, 'I'm so hardcore black, yo!!!' while imitating gang hand signs to the camera. Just because it takes place in private and is 'harmless' doesn't mean it's not racist.

why is holiday in quotes? it is a federal holiday. some sort of a statement you're making or bad punctuation? (i'm bad at punctuation too)

why not honor his day by sitting around and drinking all day, but still have a couple of your black friends that you could invite over. what... they would be offended? no way!

sounds like the thinking of a certain fast food restraunt manager to me. i don't buy the young and stupid excuse. someone posted a link about a party at uconn concerning the same thing. one was student going to school to be an attorney. he can't be that stupid.

holocaust party anyone? yay! everyone's invited. i'll have gefilte fish on a stick. oh... and please don't steal my costume idea. i plan on sewing a yellow star patch on my shirt that has "jude" written on it with a sharpie. ooopsy... and let's not forget my neato eleven digit number temporary tatoo on my wrist. no one likes a copycat.

why is this a big deal?

They weren't making fun of slavery or using racial slurs, they weren't implying black people are inferior, they were just engaging in stereotypical black people habits ( chicken and 40s ).

If some race wanted to have a white person party, and engage in stereotypical white person stuff ( wearing khakis and polos, carrying around golf clubs, or maybe white trash stereotypes - wife beaters and natty light ), I would have ABSOLUTELY no problem with it.

Obviously these kids are losers, but you guys need to lighten up, seriously.

Anyone can do whatever they want. Or are we arguing semantics?

Did you read my example? The implication was that a person believes that being in a gang is representative of black people in general was my point in that scenario.

Evidently some people don't think the party goers were mocking black people in a derogatory, racist manner. Ok. I disagree.

i have black friends who've partaken in similar MLK events.... they must be racist.

i doubt this comes back to haunt him.

yes, because a national holiday celebrating the life of one great man is equvilient to the attempted mass genocide of an entire race of people.

You are just being dramatic now. While offensive, this does even come near to what you comparing it to. Now if they were having a "Roots" themed party and people had whipped marks on their backs, it would be equal.

What these kids did was offensive and insensitive but I don't think it was mean spirited.

I'd wager this goes on at almost every college.

I view this party as celebrating black culture. What's so wrong with that? Now, I grant you that the timing is questionable, given Dr. King's holiday. If people threw a Mexican themed party with gold chains, tacos, Jesus candles, soccer items, and pinatas I really wouldn't be all bent out of shape.

Blacks are loving all the attention though -- it only adds to their case for asking for slave reparations, government money, racial hiring quotas, etc.
