Sure. But I still think it was a coincidence... more in a bit...

And these kids were probably already drunk, or on their way to it, when they even did any of this.

It's no excuse for the obvious bad upbringing and insensitivity these idiots are showing. And in a way it serves them right that the pictures now have world-wide publicity. They should never forget how something so simple can insult entire groups of people.

And what may be worse, is that it still touches such a nerve. I would venture a guess that unless you resemble the caricature they display, or know someone who did, you wouldn't really see it as much more than a party thrown on a snow day, when all of DFW was told "stay indoors" that just happened to fall on the holiday. But it happened, they documented it, and now they must face the music.

The saddest part of it is that most of these kids probably saw absolutely nothing wrong with it. A lot of hick-types are that way... but then that's a stereotype as well.

I absolutely find no humor in it, aside from the fact that they look totally asinine. And for what it's worth, the UConn students linked to previously, had more precisely replicated personal mockery going on, down to the simulated "Eve" tattoos.... and the pregnant chick holding her with-child-belly in one hand and a bottle of wine in the other. Yet, the whole world likes to mock Texas as of late... so the more severe racial slurring will go nearly unnoticed.

And back to Aunt Jemima... it is what it is. It is in some (ignorant to say the least) homes the only reference to "older" black America that some kids ever see... and I find it far more offensive that if the image is so racially charged that the syrup company fails to just re-brand it and do away with any Jemima label whatsoever. In this case, it is merely a close-enough costume replication to gain a recognition from the people familiar enough with the brand of syrup (which she's holding) to notice.

Who's more racist? The girl, or the majority of America that support that image's existence buy continuing to buy the product?

    Where's the outrage in that?

I think on 9/11 next year, I'm going to dress up like a terrorist, carrying around box cutters and get drunk. It's all OK because, you know, I'm just trying to have a good time.

    just don't wear a short-sleeve t-shirt over a long-sleeve one.

(i'm guilty on that count, too, by the way!)

I've known people who have done something like this, or worse, at nearly every college for the past several MLK days.

what if i just like their syrup and don't really give the image a second thought? i think it's like the washington redskins at this point. while they have insensitive origins, i think they're ubiquitous enough that they long ago ceased to have that connotation any more and no one views them like that anymore. but maybe that's just my perspective not being in either group.

as for short-sleeve over long-sleeve, i never wear it, but i see plenty of people doing it. plus, you have to remember, A-Train is the same guy who was so appalled by polo shirts, and well, we know how that thread turned out for him. :)

No one is questioning their right to do it. The first amendment gives you the right to offend just about anyone within some wide boundaries. That doesn't make it right.

OK then. Where do you draw the line? At what point does it stop being OK for a group of people to try to have fun while demeaning and making fun of the stereotypes associated to an entire group of people?

What if you lost someone in 9/11. Would you be able to write off my dressing that way on that day to someone just having a good time?

    I agree...

Sad thing is you're right...I would find it very hard to believe this is the first of its kind on MLK Day...This is getting a lot of pub due to the pics and from Texas (IMHO)...I don't see how the UCONN is any different...

Yeah, i'm guilty of wearing the t-shirt long sleeve thing and I have a closet full of polo's...That way I don't have to wear a jacket when its cold out at the bar and if i get beer spilt on me, who gives...

Maybe on breast cancer awareness day, we can have a "mastectomy" party with a bunch of people dressed up like women with no breasts.

Perhaps on Grandparents Day, we can have an altzheimers party where we all wander around in a stupor pretending to be senile.

How about on D-Day, we all dress up like dead soldiers and go to the beach?

    Doesn't that sound like fun?

Can a dorky white guy like me throw a hip-hop themed/costume party without being a racist? (not on MLK day)

My friend had a "dress like old people" costume party for her 30th bday party. Does that count? (It was awesome btw)
