My bet is that his grandparents are very religious and when they found the stories about zombies they flipped out because they thought their grandson was doing some sort of devil's work.

Older people (especially the very religious ones that I have encountered) seem to usually be much more put off by zombies and monsters and such than younger people and don't tend see them as the humorous horror characters that most of us do.

The story probably had him running around the high school blowing the zombies brains out. The grandparents read about him taking a gun to school and shooting everybody in the head and they flip out. Assuming that the journal actually mentions zombies at some point, the police should have released him and apologized. If the zombie part was set up elsewhere, and all they have to go on is a story about the kid going around killing everybody at a high school by shooting them in the head, then they are just trying to cover their asses from having a nother possible Columbine incident.

Of course, all of this is just speculation.
