I graduated from Morehouse. I am very, VERY dissapointed that this dude will become a Morehouse Man. Now with that being said, here are some thoughts on the schools actions (summarized thoughts from a bunch of different folks):

I think the kid should have been expelled. Morehouse is a private institution so we can basically kick kids out of school for damn near anything. And sadly, I know dudes that have been kicked out of school for far less. However, they didn't have deep pockets to afford top notch legal help.

However, this is a failure of the criminal justice system, not the college. The crimes that this young man committed didn't happen on our campus. They have nothing to "do with Morehouse", even though he was a student there. If he pled guilty to the charge then the school would have solid grounds to expel him...but he claims he was defending himself. The state judge says give the man a chance...so what is the school to do? Granted...the school is private and can do whatever the hell they want....but what do you do when the judge says give him another chance...since the kid wasn't in jail and his probation required that he be in school?

So I think they should have kicked him out....but wouldn't they still be opening themselves up to scrutiny and lawsuits? I'm not a lawyer....

Sidenote: Morehouse admits and graduates students with convictions all the time. I mean...it's a college for black men......
