Are you kidding me? The girl got arrested? And there are people who support the decision? Obviously, in today's school atmosphere, I would be okay if she got a trip to the principal's office, and have this matter looked into to make sure she wasn't trying anything malicious. Of course, then a call to her parents, and end with a stern warning to never repeat this offense. I don't know exactly the laws involved, but does this go on her permanent record? I mean, will she be considered a "felon" for the rest of her school life - or even beyond - because of this arrest? That seems to be a lot of BS to me.
What the hell is a cop thinking as he takes a 10yr old to jail? Hopefully it was, -well I better do what the boss says or Ill get fired, but I feel pretty stupid right now-. Anything less is a joke.
Hmmm...take away the steak knife and lock her up? Dang...I still have lead in my arm from someone stabbing me with a pencil...ahem, a REALLY sharp pencil in middle school. Just saying.
No, the girl was clearly at fault. This is a breach of school security. Do you really want a student going around and stabbing people in the eye with a butcher knife? I hope she gets a felony record for this serious lapse in judgment.
Just to help clarify: A steak knife and butcher's knife are two very different things. A butcher's knife would be on par with the "chef's" or "carving" knife in that picture. Steak knives are barely a step up from butter knives. Bottom line is...she was unaware of the school rule, and brought in an eating knife (small & serrated) to cut her food. I can understand if she gets disciplined for it, but arrested and charged with a felony? You've gotta be kidding me. Sure, a steak knife could be dangerous...but no more so than about 100 other things that kids can steal from a school cafeteria, teacher's desk, or principal's office.
This story would have been juicier if she was black, moslem, wearing a scarf, had a slightly bulgy tummy, had made contact with Al-Qaeda operative during lunch break (a Middle Eastern man by the name of Mohammad working in cafeteria who sold her bioproducts *shudder*), and seemed to be reciting verses from the Koran while cutting her food.... something like "Thank you Allah for the food." As of right now, there is just not enough to hold her in jail for a year or two, which is a shame.
WTF? Just take the knife away, explain the rule to her parents and go on with life. THAT IS JUST ****ING RIDICULOUS to arrest her..... **** WHOMEVER made the decision to call Johnny law. DD
So if I were a member from a cannibal tribe, can I come to America and kill someone and only get a warning because I am 'unaware' that it is illegal? Ignorance is not an excuse. The other possibility is that she knows the rule but decides she can get away with it. Now, she would know better. The danger is not in the girl having the knife. Maybe she really just want to cut her food. The danger is in someone else picking up the knife. A knife in a school is just a disaster waiting to happen.
Post reported to the NRA freedom-hater. It's people like you that nod approvingly when a 6 year old boy kisses a six year old girl and gets arrested for sexual assault. Zero tolerance policies are made for a society with zero brains and too many lawyers.
I think the punishment is excessive but what the heck was she eating that she needed a steak knife for? I mean when I was 10 it was bologna sandwiches, carrot sticks and maybe some cookies. My parents certainly weren't going to give me a steak or porkchop for lunch. Also does this remind anyone of the KFC commercial where every one in an office building is freaking out because someone is eating lunch with a knife and fork?
Yeah, she didn't need to have a steak knife, but you're kidding me right? You arrest a 10 year old girl, charge her with a freaking felony and send her to juvie for eating with a knife? The little girl's life is ruined forever.
Ahem Yeah, this was certainly the wrong way to handle things, but if you disarm everyone in an area and one person gets in with a weapon they can do a lot of damage.
You bring up some good points. Also, we're only getting part of the story here. Did she have a history of violence (and if you think a 10-year-old can't be violent, you're very wrong)? Has she assaulted students in the past? Has she brought other innappropriate materials to school? On the surface, it may seem absurd, but I bet there's more to this story. If that's true, it's the fault of the parents and not the schools. Schools are only reactionary because of overly-litigious parents who want to blame schools for everything that's wrong with their kids instead of shouldering the responsibility for their kid's behavior.
I can see your basic point. But I must point out that the difference in severity makes a lot of difference. Can a steak knife do damage in school? Yes. But with scissors and other random sharp tools lying around, do you really think a steak knife represent a significant increase in damage potential? Obviously it would be one thing if she had a gun. But that's not the case. Besides, that's not the point. They could've easily investigated into this before locking her up in jail. Suspend her for a few days, whatever. I mean, is a 10 year old girl really a menace to society that she needs to be locked up while people investigate what really happened?
That's what I was wondering too. If you need a knife for your meal, it's probably above the standard lunch fare.
