http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/front/3183423 The Chronicle says that it takes at least 3 months to recover from this kind of surgery. Hey msn, ready to concede on our bet? http://bbs2.clutchfans.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=95404&perpage=30&pagenumber=2
I say see if you can't find a proven run-producer who is in the last year of his contract to plug into Baggy's number three spot in the line up. Said player would preferably be a corner outfielder and the Astros can let Berkman heel up at 1B. If Bagwell is to never return to the diamond, I would think long and hard at building up a package of prospects to bundle up and make a run at Todd Helton. That contract is death to the Rockies, so we might be able to give them three high-level prospects in exchange for Helton. The Rockies would have to eat some of his contract a la the Rangers when they traded A-Rod. I'm going to rack my brain over the next couple of days to find a guy in the last year of his deal who'd be willing to come to Houston and play to get his numbers up in hopes of landing a long-term deal next year somewhere. Hey, we've pulled guys off the scrap heap before (Castilla, Vinny).
Its good that a decision was made for something to happen, but we all know he's done...Its sad to see, but the reality is that it'll be tough for him to come back and be the productive player he once was...
Not me, but hopefully with insurance we can recoup and subsequently redistribute his some of his salary.
If I already had $100+ million dollars in the bank and it was extremely painful for me to play I would give it up for sure. If I'm broke like I am now, I would play even if I lost both of my arms in a car wreck.
If I can't get off the DL, I retire and give up the money because I'm not doing what I'm being paid to do (play ball). I'm not just going to take money for nothing because that would taint my legacy. If I can get off the DL, but I'm no better than Mike Lamb at 1st (my would-be replacement and a career backup), then I retire because I'm hurting the team and I don't want that to taint my legacy either. But if I can come back and at least play near to the standard of an average MLB 1st baseman, then I don't retire. I'm no longer a star, but I'm not hurting the team either. And if I come back and have a 3 HR game, I call my agent and tell him to start negotiations.
I wish they'd do it NOW instead of next month. Would get him back a couple weeks earlier maybe But it probably takes time to get everything set up I guess
Even if you already have 100 million in the bank... the amount of money he is still owed. is still a ton Was his injury from playing baseball? If he got injured while playing baseball, I'd want to get all of my contract. If it was an off the field injury that would be different to me... but if he got injured from baseball and will never be the same again because of it.. i'd want my contract money
My point is.. no matter how rich you are.. it would be hard for most of us to give up over like 30 million.
Negotiate a buyout. Give Bagwell about $5 million of his remaining $20 million owed on his last season. I like Bagwell, but why hurt your team and yourself by continuing to play.
Which is exactly why he took himself out. Why not wait and see what happens before we start judging one of the two best Astros of all-time?
I am not sure exactly how contract insurance works (it's too late for this year), but if Bagwell is unable to play next year, he can essentially stay on the DL all year long in 2006 and insurance will pay part or all of his contract. It would probably be cheaper for that scenario than for a buyout.
Whatever Bags ends up getting, injured or not, he deserves. He was the cornerstone of this team for many great years and he was rewarded with a fat contract. That being said, even if we DO end up paying him thru next season, I hope we spend money this offseason as if we weren't.
From what I heard on the radio though it sounds like we owe him like this year plus 18 mil next year. plus a 7 million dollar buyout for the year after... correct?
real... dont' we have a 7 million dollar buyout on the year after next though.. club option...? I heard that somewhere
