My grandfather has no problem talking negatively about black people, but he didn't go out of his way to keep them from riding the same bus. Strom on the otherhand was beating the drums against equality. Hopefully, Strom and his like will go the way of the dinosaur.

You are such an unbelievable jerk.

You are not supposed to forget anything. You are supposed to act with class when somebody dies. If you really felt strong hate towards that person, than keep your mouth shut. Otherwise, say something like 'Rest In Peace'.

Jeff - Thank you for posting my feelings with the eloquence that I was unable to summon. Post of the year IMO.

I'd like to echo RIET's latest sentiments.

I don't like the "spitting on the graves" references because, IMO, death is always sad, no matter who it is.

However, I will question anyone who admires Strom Thurmond. He filibustered against the Civil Rights Act for chrissakes. How anyone who's not a racist or a Thurmond could admire Thurmond is beyond me.

And yes, I'll say the same when Robert Byrd dies.

Could you please show me where I wrote that I hated anyone in this thread. Your lack of reading comprehension is unbelievable.

but was it still punishable at the state level?? (legitimate question, because back then, who know?? particularly in places like alabama or mississippi)

was the legislation designed to make sure that if the states didn't punish, the feds could?

At least he was virile enough to sire offspring!! Man, I hope I still have my mojo if I'm that age. On the racial issue, you have to understand the times. Over 70 percent of whites favored continuing segregation and a bunch of whites were members of that fun bunch of murdering, hood-wearing, racist, redneck A-holes known as the KKK down South, especially in Mississippi and my home state of Alabama. To not support segregation would have been electoral suicide. Now do I know for sure that he was truly a racist? I didn't know the man, but it's possible. I'm just arguing that he took those positions to keep getting elected, which is what politicians are after. They'll take any position to keep their seats of power.

Agreed. My post was mainly tongue-in-cheek as I cannot believe how shallow his 2nd wife was.

You are right about doing anything to keep that seat. Sad that something like power can cause people to do despicable things.:(

This really takes the cake. You will honestly stop at nothing to attract attention to your "woe is me" racial guilt campaign. Utterly pathetic.

Understood. I respect his service in WW2 but find his record on civil rights vulgar and disgusting. I think Jeff made some good points because we are talking about fellow man here but I fear what would had been if he became president.

But I don't believe anyone here is defending his views on segregation.

sorta like the government during wartime...this arose out of necessity, i guess..how awful...if that's the case, then i think the feds would be entirely justified in passing such a law.

understand there is another side of that argument that might argue in support of the tenth amendment without any hatred for any particular race, though.
