For those of you who keep calling Strom Thurmond a racist i hope i hear the same things when democractic senator Robert Byrd the former kkk member dies.

Here's one of the Senators quotes

The ex-Klansman vowed never to fight "with a Negro by my side. Rather I should die a thousand times, and see Old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds."

Funny how Democrats don't attack Senator Robert Byrd's racism. I guess you can only be a racist if you're Republican?

Wow. He was a segragationist? No freakin' way. So was the majority of the country at some point.

I think I'll go to funerals of extremely old people and say "good riddance, racist".

Yes, Thurmond was misguided. Does that mean it's okay to say "SWEET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1111LOLOL HE DIED LOLOL !!!!!!!!!!".

No. That is classless. If you are so great, then rise above and just say RIP. A man died. That is all.

There are very few things in life lower than insulting a recently deceased human being. What I have seen in this thread is appalling.

I wish only the best for Strom and the family that he leaves behind. Strom Thurmond was a courageous leader who stood up for what he believed in. He served our country well and will be missed in Washington as well as at home. RIP, Strom.

From what I have read this morning (granted, obituary pieces are generally softer than normal), Thurmond turned away from his segregational stances, at least to some extent, long ago.

Instead of a flag they'll probably bury him with a white Klan sheet over his coffin.

So we'll be seeing the same thing when the Grand Dragon kicks the bucket?

I feel sorry for his family and wish them the best, but Strom was a racist, plain and simple. Someone who went out of his way to maintain the status quo that minorities were repressed and segregated, it's always a shame when anybody dies (especially when they leave a family),he's done a few good things for the country, and for that I'm thankful, but racism has no place in America, to applaud it is sickening.

Yes. He stood up for the hatred of black people. And we should all applaud him for that.

Did you visit your mother or something?

Why would they bury Thurmond with a Klan sheet? It's not like he was in the Klan. Unlike a certain Democrat who will remain nameless...

    No, the 'truth' doesn't hurt.

I just don't like it when people say things like 'good riddance' when people die. What did he ever do to you?

And I never said that YOU would miss this man. I said that he would be missed. Are you saying that I am wrong? Are you saying that he won't be missed? He will be missed. I'm not trying to make him look like an angel. He was a segragationist, along with almost all of the country at some point. So why don't you take that smug 'rolleyes' smiley and stick it up your ass.

Exactly. Sorry to say, but if you're white, your grandparents and/or great grandparents were probably segragationsists. You gonna spit on their graves too?

He was a politician, not so much a racist. He got up and rambled on what people wanted to hear ... and they wanted to hear that he would not support segergation. He did what it took to win, just like every politician does today. Do you really think your politician fully believes what hes preaching up there? Sometimes, but most times, not.

I take it you're related to Strom? Sorry to touch such a nerve that you had to make it so personal.

Whether you cared for his political views or not, you cannot deny the influence this man had. We will really never know if he had reformed in regards to his racist or segregationist stances, but the man did pass away although I would say it was far from tragic considering he was 100.

People here should be just as upset, IMO, at his second wife, Nancy, she of the forty-four years younger than him. Talk about a classic golddigger. I hope that b**** was left out of his will.

My post was a joke directed a DaDakota. I have nothing serious to add to this thread, I don't want to get in any arguments about something somebody did years ago.
