Are undergraduate degrees in the hard sciences even worth that much?

Good point. If you are a Biology/Biochemistry/Chemistry/Physics major then you will, on average, get paid like crap and do some of the worst jobs in the industry. If you go that route, you pretty much have to get a master's degree at the very least or, like most people on those fields originally intend to, attend a professional program related to medicine or health care.

Among undergraduate degrees, engineering is king. And if you decide to go the business school route, then something more math-centric like Finance/Accounting/Information Systems would be far more beneficial than General Business/Management/Marketing major. But a BBA is still a decent starter degree. It won't net you much, but on average it is better for people who do not really know what they want to do.

Though the though counts, the stripper doesnt have anything to do with the story. The article is all about how for-profit colleges are scams. They're making it like for-profit colleges leads people into stripping, when we know that for-profit colleges leads strippers into their schools just as much.

Yes the value of a degree has gone down in terms of being the standard bearer of economic mobility and opportunity.

Having more educated people in society, even if it cost them plenty to get it, is ALWAYS better for the society. Its then whether those institutions provided a good education with the degree. From this story and other accounts, we can assume PROBABLY not on the getting a quality education thing.

    Masters is the new Bachelors.

    Approximate numbers
I don't know if the bottom achievers are doing much better than bottom achievers of years past. There probably is some dilution to the process. The easiest way to make it more "unique is to make education more expensive. That just benefits the already rich to keep the riches in place. That wont work keeping everyone stupid so the upper class stays prosperous. Going back to 5% won't do the country any good.

Just gotta add networking to get ahead.

Like Ari said, it's got to be something specific: BS in Nursing (what I have), engineering, accounting, something like that to start out with a good salary.

My first BS was in PR/Advertising, and I wish they'd just call it what it is: sales. Sales is the only damn thing you're likely to get hired to do. This degree has been nothing but useless to me.

I guess my point is a lot of people are in this predicament having spending 100k+ even in supposedly good schools. It is just a sad situation all around. Can you blame someone for trying to better their lives?

Please note that the Department of Education will continue to depend on the for profit universities in order to meet the Obama administration's lofty higher education goals (To have the world's highest proportion of residents with a college degree by 2020). As a result, the new regulations will likely lack the cajones needed to put these crooks out of business.

On the bright side of things, my portfolio is up 50% in 2010, due to my many shorts in the for profit education sector.

Wrong. I graduated in Computer Engineering in non-profit university, when I tried to find jobs after graduation, I found 90% of all IT company out there or IT dept. within corporation doesn't acknowledge computer engineering degree because it's too new. C.E. was just splited from E.E. back then... and most university didn't have C.E. program.

Took me a few years of doing non-IT jobs to get back to IT field from the entry level all over again... but at least I ain't earning 15 bucks an hour anymore.

If your goal of education is job security, just take the most mainstream field unless you are straight A student with co-op experience, you simply won't find any job in any niche field.

I learned my lesson the hard way.

I don't see why these people don't just go to Community College. It is cheap with flexible class times, and if you make a good GPA you can transfer practically anywhere.

I know the goal is to get more people college degrees, but the way to accomplish that should not be by making the coursework easier.
