Someone mentioned Cactus earlier... it has re-opened over in Shepherd Square. It's not as big as it used to be though. I miss that big old sign on Alabama.
. YES! That's it! Horrible food. But I remember seeing one next to every Church's and then they all closed down, but Church's stayed.
Two Pesos Scooby's Fun Factory Pizza La Hacienda in the old Popolo Village plaza Popolo Village plaza, for that matter Monterrey House Der Weiner Scnitzel The Golden Fountain and McMahon's convenience store (if you lived in or near Enchanted Oaks 30 years ago, you know) The Goodyear blimp airfield and hangar Bob's Barbecue on 45. The barbecue joint shut down, like, 35 years ago but the sign is still there (a place called "Little Dude Self Storage" or something like that still uses it) as is the building. Are there any Casa Elena's still around? Whoever mentioned the Gamekeeper...that place ruled. Speaking of which, while it's not a Houston business, the Avalon Hill game company pretty much exists in name only.
Oh wow, my mom would take me and my sister to Weiners to buy us clothes. I would get excited every time she takes us there. I remember K-Mart too! I definitely remember that Gulfgate Mall!!
"You tell 'em, UTOTEM!" There used to be one down at the end of Reveille closest to Gulfgate. I rode my bike there all the time. Ah, memories!
Don's Western Wear. This place was around in the early 80's when everyone in Houston (including myself) wanted to look like John Travolta in Urban Cowboy. "Fine....for-git it!!!"
Do you remember to get to Gulfgate Mall and 610 West from 45 S that you would take an freeway exit that almost immediately lead to a stop sign? 610 Loop has its own wiki page. Who knew?
