Albertsons (Owned by Supervalu, mostly located out west) Piggly Wiggly (Located in Wisconsin, Alabama & South Carolina) Brookshire Bros (East/North Texas) Smith's (owned by Kroger but still has stores) Gerland's (under food fair, food town and grand market names) All still around
It was run by Radio Shack and was supposed to be a best buy/circuit city like store but larger. Their prices did them in. Fortunately, several years later we got Frys which is 1000 times better.
I believe that Brookshire Brothers is still around. One of my roommates during my freshman year at UT was the son one of the Brookshires and was as stuck-up and entitled as you can imagine.
Thanks... I think it was around in the 80's though, wasn't it? Definitely in the 70's. A couple of us seem to remember it from a few pages back.
one that wasn't mentioned Showtime Video, it was suppose to rival Blockbuster, and yea that didn't happen there was a mom/pop store called "GameProz" back in the eastside when I was in middle school that rivaled Funcoland, it had a few other locations around town, they used to do rental and sell games, then went strictly to just selling new/used games Venture, got my Rockets Starter jacket from there, heh PoFolks, country cooking restaurant, kinda like Black-Eyed Pea my dad used to work for Oshman's corporate office before it was bought out, loved the discount we got during XMas time
Wyatts Cafeteria What was the place that was next to Church's Chicken? I think they went up in pairs for awhile? I want to say JJ's but not sure. Showbiz Pizza
The Sharper Image Not only did I work there back in the 90's, I bought a whole bunch of their products..... Wait for it... with my employee discount.
Oshman's gone? Anyone remember short-sleeve sweatshirts back in the day? What a fashion idea... Utotem, too! Are these still around: Palais Royale or Kaplan's Ben Hur? Spec's? Luby's Cafeteria?
There are still Woolworth's and K-Marts here in New Zealand, although the Woolworth's is a grocery store here.
Palais Royale is still around Kaplan's Ben Hur closed its doors in 2005 from what I can tell (it opened in 1913) Spec's are everywhere - I remember their commercials on KTRH (I used to wake up and go to sleep to them and hear those commercials with the goofy music playing in the background and the guy talking) Luby's is still around
Peaches. growing up in SE missouri, there was a band from St. Louis called Head East that I heard one summer at SIU. i looked in all the store in our little tow, but couldn't find it. later, i visited my olderr sister on atlanta and she took me to peaches and i was dumbstruck by the selection (including an obscure regional band)- very cool painted album covers on the facade of the store as well, each probably 8'x8'. later, we got one in memphis, and i worked there during college for awhile. also, not quite the same thing, but on that same trip to atlanta, my sister took me to a new store called the Gap to buy a pair of Levis. Back then, there was no house brand at the Gap.
