Nearly their entire defense was kept intact. The Texans did not have one player on that 2-14 team that was worth keeping... it was a situation that was like coming into an expansion team, without the extra picks that expansion teams normally get. He did good to rebuild it to what it is now... but if he can't do much more, time to get him out and somebody else in who can. That being said, I'm not naieve enough to forget what this team was before Kubiak came here.
I was talking about hiring an established defensive coordinator to lead THIS defense. And Capers wasn't really an established coach... he was an established "expansion team" coach.
This season is over. We don't have enough consistency on this team to go 6-1 over the last 7 games. I just hope that we lose enough games so that McNair is forced to fire Kubiak. I keep hearing on the radio that if we go 8-8 or 9-7 that McNair might be satisfied with axing Bush only. There's just been too much inconsistency during Kubiak's reign. This was the last season for me to give Kubes the benefit of the doubt. Pay Gruden his money and let him make us into an aggressive mentally tough team that won't back down and plays with fire.
Well on the DC front, same argument. Richard Smith was an established DC who had experience, look at what happened to him here. And no credit for Capers taking the Panthers to the NFC title game? For the record, I wasn't a big Capers fan. My point in all of this is the Texans seem can't seem to get wrong right, all their personnel decisions have blown up in their face.
Why would Gruden come here over a place like Dallas? They have potentially more pieces in place already on offense and have an above average defense. If any former established coach is coming out of the booth (Billick, Gruden, Cowher), Dallas is going to be the job they're coming out for.
Capers and the Panthers beneffited from lax expansion rules that actually gave those teams a HUGE advantage (hence the early success of the Panthers and the Jaguars). The rules changed, hence the extended sucktitude of Cleveland and Houston. And Capers always had strong defenses... and he still has a strong defense in Green Bay. But he wasn't well-rounded enough to be a head coach. Kubiak may not be either, but he likely gets another chance somewhere else if he ultimately leaves here (hell, if Wade Phillips can get 3-4 coaching gigs, Kubiak can get at least 2). And again... you can't fault Kubiak for turning Foster into an MVP candidate, Schaub into a pro bowler, an inept offensive line into one of the better cohesive units in the league, turning any tight end he plays into a pro bowl candidate, and continuing to cultivate the greatness of AJ.
He's going to get his money, but in Houston he doesn't have to worry about dealing with Jerry Jones. My guess would be that Gruden learned his lesson with Al Davis and is not interested in going down that path again... at least that's what I'm hoping for.
Good point, he has definitely given us a strong offense. I'd love to keep him around as the OC =) lol
Not really. Jerry Jones clashes with his coaches. It's not as attractive as it looks. At least with McNair he hires the guys and stays out of their way...except with Carr apparently.
I'm done with this regime. So excited to start the season, and yet another comedy of errors and gravitation to mediocrity. It's like the Oilers never left.
He gets more money and more limelight in Dallas. Gruden LOVES the spotlight. He LOVES being heard on national tv every single week. He's already made it known that he's not leaving his current gig unless its for something comparable. Also, Al Davis is the one who gave Gruden the opportunity to be a head coach in this league (as a very young and relatively unproven guy).
Jerry Jones will get a Super Bowl caliber coach if he wants. The best case scenario is to have Jason Garrett have some real success, then Jones won't be looking.
Not with Jerry Jones as GM, nanny, fly in the room intruding all the time. Plus Gruden is a 4-3 guy and he'd come into Houston with a Top 5 offense and some young tools on Defense.
Even more of a reason to root for the Cowboys to start winning under Garrett. But regardless, I'd never underestimate Jones' penchant for hiring a coach whose strings he can control.
Of course. . .you Kool-Aid Drinker You! At this point I am just joking around because . . i really need a drink Rocket River
Gruden will do whatever he wants to do. I simply said that he's pretty happy as a commentator... and wouldn't leave the booth for "any" job. The Texans situation is pretty average. The Cowboys job is more than that (simply for the national TV coverage and the prestige of leading them back to the top). Also, since when does Gruden care about the defense? He had two completely different systems in Oakland and Tampa (the latter being Tony Dungy's defense). He's an offensive guy who has enough "fire" to get the defense riled up... but he's not going to be the main x's and O's guy for the defensive side of things.
