the problem is....HE'S KNOWN THAT'S THE PROBLEM! This is Gary's team. Not Gary's offense. Gary is the highest paid person who isn't playing football. Higher paid than Rick Smith. Gary hired Rick..not the other way around.
exactly. Gary isnt going to get overly involved in the defense, that's just not his thing. ANd that's fine, a lot of coaches will focus on one side of the ball, and i have no problem with that. BUT, when you do that the biggest key is getting someone to control the defense... for whatever reason Gary hasnt hired the/found the right defensive guy to take charge.
Sure, there's better DC's and better DB coaches out there, but Bush and Gibbs are really cool guys that he has fun bowling with after work. Can't put a price on that sort of thing. Holy.
And what I don't get is that the blueprint for young coaches like Kubiak is out there, especially offensive-minded ones: Hire an experienced defensive coordinator to run that side of the ball. Payton did it in NO; Tomlin inherited LaBeau; Mangini has a Ryan brother; Haley brought in Romeo; McCarthy has Capers.... He had it partially right out of the gate: Having Sherman on staff was a smart move. But he has not hired one but TWO* inexperienced defensive coordinators, which is just inexplicable. That and drafting projects will be his ultimate undoing. You have to find guys that can *play*/*coach* - not guys that have high ceilings. Potential is still 0-0 in the NFL. * Still shocked he passed on Mike Nolan for Bush. Nolan fit every profile - even had the Denver connection. Better: He knows what he's doing - look at Miami's D: it's ranked 8th overall and 6th against the pass (Ric slams his head against his desk). This guy was the Ravens' defensive coordinator! And he went with Frank Bush.... mindbottling.
I think when Kubiak gets a second chance he will have learned from his mistakes of his "buddy only" hiring policy.
You know, until reading an article yesterday, I had forgotten that we already have Ray Rhodes on our staff. What is his job title? Why is he not coordinator? Is it because of his health problems? How is Ray Freakin' Rhodes in any way involved with a defense that could end up as the worst defense in the history of the NFL?
I know he started as an assistant secondary coach because he wanted a low stress position due to health problems. I believe now he is a "senior assistant" or something like that. You have to think Kubiak is considering axing Frank Bush and giving Rhodes a shot at DC, which could ultimately save Kub's job. That would be my worst nightmare - Rhodes gets the defense somewhat going just in time to get us to 8-8, and cue the "next year is our year" spin and the vote of confidence from Mcnair.
I really believe Kubiak doesn't want to hire any assistant coach who would can be seen as a possible replacement for him. McNair doesn't trust anyone under the current staff to take over as head coach and this is probably the only reason Kubiak is still employed.
All I'm trying to point out is the difference between subpar/mediocre coaches and good/great ones. If you cannot get your team (which has at least average talent) to respond after a loss (or in this case 2 losses), you need either a new coach or better team leaders.
So I guess he's a "consultant" sort of like Dan Reeves a few years ago... Wiki has him listed as the defensive backs coach. I KNOW that can't be right....right?
Meanwhile, in the last 3 years the Texans have had: 2 3-game losing streaks 2 4-game losing streaks 1 current 3-game losing streak (which will probably grow to 5 or 6....)
Rhodes primarily worked with the safties last year and they did improve and play better throughout the season. I haven't got a clue what he's actually doing now. He's simply called the "senior defensive assistant", whatever that means.
Someone asked about Rhodes calling the plays in Kubiak's press conference yesterday. He said something about Rhodes being pretty involved in it already and that he's essentially right next to Bush on the sideline.
i agree that Kubiak can't control where the ball bounces when the CB does what he is supposed to do i agree that Kubiak can't make players catch passes they should catch, make blocks they should, stop them from fumbling, getting penalties, etc. etc. BUT who called the passing play over the middle of the field without enough time to get the FG off? Probably thought he could just spike it...on 4th down... ultimately if we make the CORRECT call there we either kick it for a FG or punt the ball and make them have to go at least 80 yards in one play.
Something about Dreesen was the 2nd read and Kubiak was confident in that route because they've gotten 15(at least 5 would have to be YAC in this case) with it before. Ugh
