The Koran(sp?) may deal very harshly with criminals and I do not agree with many things that is specifies but ... it obviously deters crime as the crime rate in the middle east is miniscule compared to our own. You steal...off with your freaking hand!!! That I agree with!!!
The Koran was written by MAN to control MAN...as was the Bible, and every other religious book out there. When GOD shows up and hands his book "IN PERSON" then I will believe that ANY religion has it even remotely close. The muslim religion is a joke.....as are all the rest. DD
SWTSig, That is some funny stuff.....I think all religions are a joke, and that is bannable....bring it on Ashcroft. DD
I have been consistent regarding my stance on religions. If people don't like to read what I think about it, then they can skip it. I am not offending anyone in general, just saying that I think religion is something invented by man to control the masses, and is nothing even close to what God intends. As I said earlier as soon as God himself, or herself comes down and says "What's up" I will consider religions with a MASSIVE grain of salt. Especially when you have the David Koresh, Jim Jones, Osama Bin Laden, Ayatollah Kohmahnies...spawned using religion as a way to get their power. DISGUSTING that so many people are so gulliable. DD
It may not be wise to trash anyone's religion, but since when did a low opinion of religion become a bannable offense? After all, he didn't target the followers with the comment, but the religion(s) itself.
didn't mean it like that.... my bad. just saying that it's happened before..... and i still agree w/ a lot of what you say.
I agree with your thoughts, though not necessarily with the spirit in which they were delivered. I, too, prefer a more personal, individual spiritual life that looks for peace within. But we can't deny the importance of religion today. Religion is *absolutely* a man-made invention -- and it certainly can be seen as an opiate for the masses. Institutionalized faith can be a horrifyingly banal and manipulative entity, easily corrupted to forward political ideas and unjust social values. From a historical perspective, religion is probably the most obvious thread linking some of man's most despicable acts. But religion also serves a beautiful and vital function -- it gives people hope and meaning. In a wildly violent and unpredictable world, it's comforting to know that your place in eternity is secured and that there's order in the chaos. Humans desperately crave meaning and, rightly or wrongly, religion can serve that purpose. Even if there is no god and no afterlife, the idea of both have immense value. That religion can be corrupted speaks not of religion itself, but of its followers. The institution of religion plays an unquestionable role in the evolution of mankind and in our comprehension of everything around us. We *all* seek understanding and direction. It's a big, scary universe, and we all want to know our role in this cosmic symphony. Really, in this respect, religion is no different from science or math -- seeking absolute truths and meanings in seemingly random elements.
GreenVegan76, I applaud your post. It is very pleasant to see thoughts NOT being expressed in an overly simplicistic, confrontational way.
Ok, back to the grand topic of sex from trivial things like religions. Coolchick, sex creates problems, so do any other thing in the world. To ban sex outside of marriage and punish those who violate it out of fear of sex related crimes is like to avoid eating out of the fear of choking. Simply put, one should not be responsible for the possible indirect negative effects of one's action, because it is unfair to punish a man over something he didn't mean to and directly involved. If you think that sex outside of marriage brings crimes, that's not unreasonable, but those crimes are largely indirect outcome of such sex. To ban sex outside of marriage under the excuse of protecting common interests is hypocrtic and unfair. Examples, how about the Muslims not driving a car so no one would get hurt or pollute the environment? how about the Muslims don't watch any movies or ride roller coasters because you are consuming energy that can be used to draw water for people that don't even have drinking water? how about the Muslims don't smoke so nobody gets second hand smoke? The sex as beast type of thinking look at only one side of sex, decides sex outside marriage brings sex abuse, sex abuse brings crimes, and therefore it should be outlawed. This is true to some extent. However, it's going extreme as sex ignorance brings harm as well as sex abuse. Sexual satisfaction is an important part of family life. People who are ignorant of their partner's sexual desire and capability might find themselves unsatisfied in marriage. As a result, they seek for sex partners outside a marriage. This is an obvious outcome, the women that was stoned might be a victim of sex ignorance. She might find out that her husband is sexual dysfunctional on the wedding night because sex ignorance bans her from knowing otherwise. The demonization of sex is nothing new, it has been in basic every country and culture in various stages, and the Muslims should relax over it. Sure, you can brag about that there is so few sex offenders and revengeful bastards in your country, but on the other hand, there is women that has to cover their face all their lives, being punished if they unveil their face to strangers, and many women not experiencing orgasms in their whole life for their sexual ignorance, and many women being stoned for slight offense such as outside marriage sex, and many innocent women being stoned for wrong, unfounded, made up accusations of being "lusty". With your gain here comes your loss, like the freedom pursuing western countries, while they too face the cost of their freedom, such as the overflood of guns. Aside from basic freedoms such as the freedom of physical movement, freedom is a subjective thing, and human lives shouldn't be involved in subjective judgement. The question is not whether we want to harm or save people, it's how do we know that we saved more people than we harmed? BTW, how come the man who had sex with the woman wasn't stoned?
It's no surprise to see these countries so far behind the rest of the world. In terms of military, economics and political power, these backward countries have none. They continue to hold on to their precious antiquated ideologies that don't foster a good environment for advancement in the modern world. Adaptation is unheard of. How many Muslim countries are leaders in the world? moderate Turkey? Saudi Arabia? Indonesia? Do they even crack the top 20 ranking? However, we need to keep in mind that while these laws may seem archaic and cruel to us, it is the custom and tradition in which these people have lived by. I don't agree with it and wish they could join the rest of the modern world, but we should respect it. They made their bed. Good luck with the stoning and keep wearing the burqa in the Summer.
Green, You said it much more elequontly than I did. I am a blunt person......not a diplomat. Probably why I am where I am today....no time for p***y footing around. DD
*sigh* But if we stop the "cancer" of Islam (tongue in cheek), wouldn't that be messing with the Prime Directive? Islam actually promotes peace. There are the fanatics, however. And their fanatics and our fanatics twist religion to suit their needs and just keep pushing each other....... I want to start attending church again. I know of one that I like. Maybe purge me of some of this anti-religion cynicism that world events have instilled in me.
