Green was a consensus top 3 pick, so it wasn't that great of a feat to be honest. Christopher and Sengun were great picks though in the later round.
his FA and Trades moves have been puzzling to say the least. but you can't argue with the talent evaluations. Green/Sengun/JC/KMJ all super young. Then you still could add Garuba/Nix to the mix (they are both barely 20 years old) and we still have an armada of draft picks coming our way. Future looks bright.
yeah I think the verdict is still out who will be the best player from last years draft, but the fact that green has put himself back in that conversation is very positive. I think we have to give Stone a lot of credit for the Sengun and Christopher picks. One year later it looks like Sengun was the 7th best player drafted, and you could argue Christopher at #14. Garuba is showing some rebounding and defensive prowess; he gets an incomplete but excited to see if he can take a big step next year. A lot will depend on the moves he makes this offseason to add another big piece beyond our first draft pick. But Green and a Sengun is a nice young foundation. Next year we have to win more games.
Two points. He either delivers a championship or not. He either establishes a championship caliber culture/environment or not. (Else he falls under mediocre, good GM.) Borderline: He builds a team like the '18 team but falls short. IMO he has to develop an eye for how to get elite role players like Horry who are willing to stay on the bench. A big plus asset.
He was gifted one of Green or Mobley, really couldn't **** that up. He trusted his scouts when trading up for Sengun He trusted his gut when taking Christopher But he gets a F------ for his awful deadline trades. The Spurs got a first for Thad Young and you couldn't move EG?
Stone deserves credit for going green over Mobley. mobley will be a productive player for a long time… but Stone elected to think long term and take the higher ceiling piece
If all we were offered was a late frp for Gordon in 2022 it was smart not to trade him. If we decide to compete next year, Gordon will be valuable, if not we can still trade him or buy him out. We didn’t need another late round frp this year as we have two incoming draft picks already and this year is not a deep draft.
A+ so far. Green is a cornerstone piece. A possible top 1-3 player on a championship team. That we had him just 5-6 months after trading Harden is incredible luck, but from where we sit today, picking him over Mobley looks like the right move. We got 2.5 years to evaluate KPJ for nothing. Trading 2 non-lottery 1st that may never have conveyed for Sengun was great both on the evaluation side and asset management side. Drafting Christopher looks like a hit. Can he and Green co-exist as starting guards for the future? No idea, but he looks like he could be a rotation guard on a championship team if his shooting develops. The defense is already there. Garuba is a standard mid-20s drafted lottery ticket. If he works out, great. If not, it was a worthwhile gamble. Tanking this year was the right strategy. That involved benching Wall for the entire season, rolling with the double big lineup to suppress wins, and benching Gordon, Wood, etc. when we needed to go full-on tanking. He made a mistake with Theis, but undid it quickly with no long term consequences. Controversial take: NOT trading Gordon and Wood was RIGHT move. We were likely being offered 2022 1st round picks. WE DONT NEED mid/late 2022 FRPs!!! We already have Christopher, Garuba, Green, KJ Martin, Mathews, Nix, KPJ, Sengun and Tate as young guys, plus our 2022 1st and the Nets 2022 1st. That's 11 young players that need development, plus we haven't even mentioned Gordon, Wood, Nwaba and Wall who are all signed through next year. My guess is both Gordon and Wood will be traded in the offseason, either to help us move up in the 2022 draft or for 2023 or later picks. That is a better outcome for us than taking another 1-2 mid/late first round 2022 picks that we can't give any playing time. Signing Tate, drafting KJ Martin, signing Wood...all very good moves. Everybody wants to tank, but nobody likes what it takes to tank the right way. Through the lens of a rebuilding team that's in asset acquisition mode, but plans to be competitive for championships in 3-5 years, Stone has done a masterful job.
Consensus top 3 pick but Rox were picking top 2. Stone deserves credit for picking Green over Mobley. It aint a given Mobley barely improved at all in his 2nd year while Jalen Green is now consistent 25 ppg on insane efficiency.
