I don't know why sometimes I'm so hesitant to take my own advice.

I sent an email to a friend last night as follows:

For some reason I didn't buy at the open, thinking there was going to be an initial pullback. The entire sector is up BIG today.

it's hard to make money anticipating. money is usually made reacting to whatever happens.

Yeah, but I was high on solar because I thought that particular sector had been HEAVILY oversold as a result of the oil crash...Some of these stocks have potential for 80-100% gains in the next couple of months. An Obama election win will only help to catalyze that.

I bought some STP on the pullback, and if the market pulls back again in the coming days, I'll look to pick up some LDK -- that's a solid company. I rode it up to $50 and later sold at $46 before the market crash happened.

I agree on solar. it's a very oversold sector. You could also just buy the TAN as a solar ETF to diversify your portfolio. I have a lot of LDK. I think by 2012 it can be a $200 stock given it will have three polysilicon plants by then. It will be able to reduce its material costs and raise its gross margin to 45 percent which is similar to FSLR numbers.

I just bought SDS at 85

Solar in general is not that great of a play to me. LDK is one of those iffy Chinese firms that has had questionable accounting practices in the past. Right now their tech is not as competitive to thin-film which is where it's at. Pure silicon prices will likely continue to get higher and cut into profits. Correct me if I'm wrong on these accounts, because it's been a while since I touched LDK.

Absolutely ridiculous. I clicked refresh on Google finance and next thing I know the market is down 20 after being up 200.

It's not "the sharks:". It's called profit taking. If the dow ran up 1200 points in two days, then people take profit especially if they have been taking it in the ass for the past two weeks.

LDK is constructing its only polysilicon plants. The cost of silicon prices will not have any affect on it since it can just use it's own raw materials. And there is nothing wrong with its accounting practices. KPMG already signed off on them. Furthermore it had an over subscribed secondary offering that sold for $42 a share. It was underwritten by GS and UBS.

I've flipped LDK many times and I still don't think it's the safest long solar play. I know the company is supposedly led by one of the best Chinese entrepreneurs, Xiaofeng Peng, who has a lot of government connections. LDK is not invested in thin solar, it's in polycrystalline which is a losing solar tech. In fact (again correct me if I'm wrong), Peng decided to do an offshoot that IS invested in thin film that isn't even under the LDK umbrella. To me this is a move that should bring up a big question mark.

I do not trust a lot of Chinese accounting practices, regardless of the result of that crazy guy who made false claims against the company. This is based on personal experience - I make multiple visits to China each year and know hundreds of expats and local hires across every industry. Sure, there's always money to be made on speculative, high volatility stocks like this - I've done it many times with LDK - but I do it in the shortest window possible. To go long on LDK however, I just think there are better long plays. Everyone has their own views, take my advice with a grain of salt.

Funny thing is a few days ago a coworker said that I should look into buying casino stocks because they are almost bottomed out. I checked them out and it looked like they were close to all-time lows. I had no free funds at the time and figured I'd try to pick some up at some point in the future.

And the daytrader's wet dream happened today...

    MGM MIRAGE
    MGM
    13.75
    +3.42 (33.11%)

    Boyd Gaming Corporation
    BYD
    5.63
    +1.25
    (28.54%)

    Wynn Resorts, Limited
    WYNN
    41.05
    +8.17 (24.85%)

    Las Vegas Sands Corp.
    LVS
    8.91
    +3.96 (80.00%)

I think I'll listen to my coworker's advice a little more often. :D

Once Dell started dipping below 13 I jumped in with both feet. But I'm planning on holding for awhile. I honestly think over the long term I'll almost double before punching out.
