Eversince teams started to take advantage of technologies and opportunities today to heavily scout defense and implement defensive strategies. Steve Kerr wrote a pretty good article on this a while back, don't know if I can still find it though. Basically he said that teams concentrate a lot more on defense these days and that teams are shooting a lower percentage not only because of lacking fundamentals (which is true) but also because defense these days are that much tougher.
First I 'd like to see a 3-pointer normalized shooting percentage for these PGs. With the exception of Kidd, all the other 3 guards are 3 point bombers. For example, Hinrich got several games that he was 6-8 from behind the arc. Anyway, I guess the true efficiency of shooting for these 3 guards will be around 44-45%, while Steve around 42%.
Steve is 9th out of the 12 Western Conference point guards in terms of points per shot this season. However, he was 3rd in terms of PPS among Western Conference point guards last season. This means that referees may no longer be calling fouls when he throws himself into a crowd of defenders in the paint. That used to be a foul, but I don't think referees will give that call now. This is why a point guard who has an excellent jumpshot is succeeding in the Western Conference. Forcing a referee to blow the whistle is not good strategy since the NBA is imposing an international-style of play that discourages contact in the paint.
Hinrich has a adjusted field goal percentage of 48.6%. Baron has 45.1%. Kidd has 44.5%. Steve has 43.7%.
What the hell is adjusted shooting percentage? I've read this forum for the last 5 years and I don't remember coming across this term before?
yeah seriously, charvo youre getting slightly annoying throwing out stupid stats. i mean seriously ... who ever uses adjusted fg% to prove anything?
^ AFG%: Adjusted FG Percentage = [(PTS - FTM)/FGA]/2 ADJ FG% measures shooting efficiency by taking into account the total points a player produces through his field goal attempts. The intention of this adjustment is largely to evaluate the impact of three-point shooting. from ESPN website
There's an official designation for this...so muh so that it's a proper title? I am so out of the loop.
What I know is that SF3 always missed the last shots at the end of every QTR. I hope that JVG could let the other guy finish the last shots.
steve francis this year......... PGs in the NBA east and west: #3 Rebounds #2 Block Shots #8 Scoring #10 Steals #12 Assists #12 Double Doubles
Who's the best point guard in the West this year? It's either Bibby or Cassell. Both don't rebound that well. Both don't block shots. However, they can both put the ball in the basket pretty well. The ability to put the ball in the basket is an underrated skill.
Actually people shouldn't be surprised about Steve using 40% as the figure. It wasn't Steve who chose it, but the media. They kept saying that his percentage was below 40%. So he merely used the same number.
Steve's had it rough lately from fans and media, so if he wants to shoot back because he hit a milestone, albeit minor, then let him do it. I'd rather have a Feelin good Francis for the rest of the season than a down in the dumps Steve Francis.
Why is that??? Haters compare every other part of his game to those other PG's and just b/c SF is shooting better than them we shouldn't compare FG%??? Man haters are so stupid, using anything possible even though it doesn't make any sense to bash him. Peace.
