I almost punched a fan today who said basically the same thing as I walked past him. Without Steve Francis, we'd have been blown out in this series. We have some stupid fans.
I can't let this go, even though I agree with your basic point. The question isn't whether we'd have been better off without Francis. It's whether we'd be better off with a player who fits the system better whom we could get for Francis. Conflating the two questions doesn't really answer anything...
Well, i very very very rarely post in the GARM...just cuz there's so much bickering. I barely ever even read the GARM...but i was just coming in here to post props to Francis even though they lost. I think Francis is finally and finely stepping up to his role on the team. He doesn't always need to carry the ball up to court, and he doesn't. Also - he finally seems to know when to slow the game down and when to speed it up. I like seeing his ability to control the flow of the game and i think that this is something that will be huge for the rockets success in the next few years - or if they trade him - it will be huge for another teams success. Francis is developing into a more solid player than he's ever been just in these few games in the playoffs. He is a prime time player and he is finally showing that.
SF3 has been the best player on the COURT in this series. Sure he made some mistakes, but if we had shot better than 4-22 from the 3, we would have taken the game. I am more upset at Cat jacking up so many shots, especially when they were not falling.
Steve Francis' lack of point guard skills did not hurt us today. He had few turnovers, pushed the ball quickly, and ran the offense very well. More importantly, we would have lost by much worse if we had Tinsley or Billups (or whatever PG you have in mind) insted of Steve to create the offense. Who else could we go to if we had a pass PG? Unfortunately Yao did not play like a superstar. Our outside shooters did not hit. It was a team loss- bad fouls, turnovers, and bricking 3's contributed to the loss in the end. The defense kept us in it, however.
say we traded Francis for a true point guard, one who wasn't a scoring machine but made consistent good passes and handled the ball well. We wouldn't be in a better position then we are now, no one else is strong enough to carry this team. The way I see it, Francis has basically stepped up and put his balls on the line because no one else will.
in the end it was turnovers though. we would have survived shooting 18% from three if we didn't turn it over that much. Mobley just couldn't buy a shot today besides those nifty layups.

I doubt that too many people really believe otherwise. But, the Lakers are different than every other team in the league. LA is one of the few teams that plays Yao straight up and doesn't pack in their defense to cut off Mobley and Francis' driving lanes. An added bonus is that LA doesn't really have a clue as how to defend the pick and roll. The problem arises when we play anybody else. They pack it in to stop Yao and unfortunately, that same defense is very effective against our guards. 2) Almost any deal that I've seen proposed for Francis has us receiving a "non-PG" as the major component of the trade. I don't remember seeing any trade ideas where we trade Francis straight up for another PG. Instead I've seen guys like McGrady, Brand and Ray Allen proposed in deals for Francis. We'd have to also acquire a PG as part of those trades or other trades or sign a FA PG. Are there combinations of players that would make us better? Sure, there are. Can we actually acquire them? We won't know that until the offseason. If we have the chance to make trades and improve the team, then I think that we won't hesitate to make a deal. If the offers we get aren't too attractive, then we won't make the deals.
For goodness sakes, check out the replays -- Stevie's elbow was hit on the airball. And if not? So what, no Stevie no contest. For goodness sakes, check out the replays -- Kobe kicked the 'steal' that led to his 'wonderful' play. And for goodness sakes, check out the replays -- why did Mo choke the rebound in the last seconds? Coulda woulda shoulda be 3 - 1 in favor of the good guys. It's not, and that's a bloody shame and bloody reality.
Francis has too big of an ego and tries to be the man too much and it cost them the game today. It's no different then the regular season when he always has to take the last shot of the quarter or game. He tries to do everything himself, when it would be a lot easier to just trust his teammates more. That his why this team is going nowhere until they get a pg with a brain. We'd be up 3-1 in this series with a decent pg.
IIRC he passed up the big shot last time and it cost us game 2... So no we wouldnt be up 3-1... Thats all speculation. If there was just a decent gaurd, there wouldnt be as much attention paid to that gaurd and Yao wouldn't be getting any sort of shot off. And that means we rely our offense on Mo T and Cat, which is arright in the regular season, but not against the Lakers.
First of all... I can not believe the amount of personal insults that go in in here. Is this site a place to state opinions about the ROX or to insult those who state their opinion? I was frustrated after the game and like many of us in here... frustrated at Stevie. I voiced my frustration and 1 of 3 things happened. 1. People disagreed saying that other mistakes by other players and good plays by the Lakers cost us the game... not just stevie. 2. People agreed. 3. People insulted. Clutch BBC is awesome because it gives fans a chance to exchange ideas, vent on players and coaches, and give props to players and coaches. I enjoy reading the give and take between people and the educated arguements. But for those of you who just post comments like "Don't let anyone tell you any differently, but you're straight up lame"... you are the worse people on here. Argue, agree, disagree... but don't was time with insults unless they are backed up by something related to the thread.
