So what is it about "today's NBA" that makes someone who wants to get the ball to Yao a lot unrealistic? I'm not sure what his point is there!

I don't understand the first part either. "3 point shooter that doesn't get much playing time" couldn't apply to Legler. He doesn't even play anymore.

    Lets see,

We actually did try to get the ball to yao quite often the last 3 games.

Steve was single covered in the Lakers game, and he was hot, and he is an all star; They were not as determined to stop him as much as the Heat were. The Heat doubled Steve every time off the pick n roll, unlike Lakers(therefore the only 1 assist). If any all-star guard is single covered (hint, Kobe), they can get 40 when they are hot. So he can say that he got in in the flow of the game. He did not get the 27 against Miami in the flow of the game, he forced the issue a little. But he kind of had to which leads to...

Yao was not at all aggressive, which if he had been, would have helped us possibly win the ball game. So u can blame that on his youth.

so everything that Steve said was basically right, so what in the world are u b****in about Rockets-r-us???? Did u watch the last 3 games or just look at the box score????

Yeah, I think that's what he means. How sad. And we thought he was finally starting to get it thanks to that conversation.

You are contorting the statement. He didn't say todays PGs have reasons not to give the ball to Yao. He didn't say that AT ALL.

I took it as meaning (if he was serious) that only today's PGs are facing zones. PGs from past eras flat out had a much easier time getting the ball to big men. That is an undeniable fact!

I don't really buy that statement too much, but the idea of zones making it a whole different ball game is much more understandable than you assuming Francis meant there are reasons today's PGs don't want to give the ball to Yao.

Come on guys, it was obviously Tim Legler. Legler was harping on Steve this past week for not getting the ball to Yao Ming, and then Steve says "you know who I'm talking about" while being interviewed by ESPN. When he said the thing about playing time, he meant in the past, when Legler played. Hell, even the Sportscenter guy took a small dig at Legler by saying "Tim, it's hard to get him the ball when they're defending him like that (referring to the Heat fronting/doubling Yao)."

I didn't mean to distort his statement. But yeah, the zone defense is one possible explanation of what he said.

But I was thinking he meant more in terms that in todays game there are more guys like him who can take over, like Iverson, Pierce, Kobe, etc. You don't need to go inside these days, he seemed to be saying. But maybe I'm just being too pessimistic.

    Now lets dissect little Stevies' (the modern NBA point guard) comments below;

"anyone saying that we don't get the ball enough to Yao is either a 3 point shooter that doesn't get much playing time or some one that has not played point guard in today's NBA"

RED - This potion of his quote refers to AN ACTIVE perimeter-hugging NBA player = See GLEN RICE.

Blue - This refers to a point guard or play maker that is no longer in the NBA (retired) = See Tim Legler or Oscar Robertson

The keywords have been highlighted using single underlines.

    HeyDude -

Of course I watched the games, and have been to all but one of the home games in the past three weeks (sadly).

I hope those of you who did not see the interview can access it via a web link so my points can be proven as accurate.

MANY MANY people on this board have gone on ad nauseum about Yao posting up and getting position, only to watch Steve and Cat wave him off or just dribble away for a horrible shot!!

Now that Steve has essentially lied on national T.V. about the frequency with which they are attempting to do to get Yao the ball, some of you want to take issue with me for reporting it and having an opposing opinion?

The ONLY times they have tried consistently to get Yao the ball was in the two Utah games. Yao got 8 shots against Miami. Andy your going to defend that crap?????????????????

    Give me a break!

really. I took the " they dont understand what it means to be a point guard in this day and age "as meaning he was a scoring point guard, not pass first shoot second type of player." that is his type of game, so I dont see anything wrong with saying so.

Well for what it's worth, isn't Steve's problem more that he doesn't KNOW HOW to get the ball to Yao? I mean, I have seen have give the ball to Yao several times in a row as the first option down the court. The problem is he doesn't know how to make it easier on Yao. Someone like Stockton knows all the little tricks to make it easier for the bigger man, while Steve still has to learn.

Yes. Steve can take over the game 5 out of 10. But
Guard-oriented offense is the least consistent IMO.
Rox will be a perennial .500 team if relying on Steve
    to take over the game.

I like it when people try to correct others and make mistakes. He was talking about Legler and Greg Anthony. He meant to say a 3pt shooter thatdidn't get much playing time.

    Fegwu,

Legler was not a PG. He was a 3pt shooting Shooting Guard. He never played PG.

Further, Glen Rice never complained about PT. Glen Rice never said we need to get the ball to Yao more; he said we need to move it around and stop using him as a 3-pt shooter, so how exactly is Glen Rice relevant here?

Further, when he says, "you know who I'm talking about," assumes the ESPN crowd would even know Rice said the Rockets need more ball movement to utilize him. The ESPN crowd does not know that. It doesn't make sense that they "should know who he is talking about."

Now Legler (an ESPN Analyst) has time and time again made point of Francis not getting the ball to Yao, and you are going to base all your proof on a verb tense to say Francis was calling out Rice who is on the IR and is a co-captain with Steve, and Steve really has never called out a teammate before.
