When people get uber rich or successful, some of it due to hard work, some due to timing and luck, they start to think they know a lot about everything and people actually care what they think.

Steve Jobs was a great salesman, and technologist, but the rest of the stuff, meh, it is like listening to actors talk about politics....they know the same as everyone else does, which is not much.

I just read the Steve Jobs article from last week's Rolling Stone.
It's fascinating and insightful but doesn't mention that he gave any thought to business climates. It's a lot more about restless youth, search for enlightenment, computing as revolution, quality in design and why Bill Gates has to take 100 cents of every dollar.

I agree 100% with this. As someone that has represented people on both sides of the fence, there is no doubt that the teacher union's in this nation do not have the best interest of the students at heart (why would they, they are a union for teachers). Teacher union's reward those that play by their rules, not those that teach well.

The RS article mentions a middle school teacher as Steve Job's savior; recognizing the potential behind his rebellion and actually motivating him with money from her own paycheck for finished assignments.

You wouldn't need teachers unions is Americans applied the real value to society to their jobs. But your society spends more to sell cures for restless leg syndrome than teaching your children.

I think this is partially true. Teacher's unions do look out for the teachers first, and that is their job and there is nothing wrong with that.

However, the teacher union I am part of values making the union stronger by ensuring that teachers have teaching standards that they are assessed on and must pass. They offer services for those teachers that don't meet the standards. So teachers are held accountable, and there is a value on quality teaching.

I'm all in favor of rewarding teachers for doing a good job, but I don't think lack of motivation is a problem with most teachers. They aren't doing the work because they think it's a breeze and doesn't require much work. If they did think that, they usually don't last long in the profession.

What a crock. Salaries are based on a number of factors which affect supply and demand. Some of the factors affecting supply are how difficult the job is, how unpleasant the job is, the hours involved, etc. Some of the factors affecting demand are how many people use the job, the value people place on the service provided, etc.

The "real value to society" is not a factor because it is a basically meaningless phrase. What is the real value to society of a teacher? Certainly it is important to the future that people are educated. Are they more valuable than a farm laborer? It is even more important to the future that people are fed than educated right? Can't go to school if you starve to death. Are they more valuable than a plumber? Can't go to school if you are dying of dysentery because there is no working sewer system. Are they more valuable than a professional athlete? Of course, the future is not going to be endangered because of a lack of pro sports.

This is where the other factors come into play. It is a lot harder to replace Peyton Manning than it is to replace Mrs. Whogivesacrap your third grade teacher. Society hasn't gotten together in some conspiracy against teachers to keep them poor and downtrodden with only the union protecting them from being slaves, they are paid what they are paid because that is what the market says to pay them. The unions bump up their pay from the salaries commanded by the teachers in private schools making market value, but that isn't needed so much as desired by the teachers.

And before anyone thinks I have something against teachers, I should tell you that my Mom is a retired elementary school teacher and my brother is a high school teacher, so I am not unfamiliar with the goings on of education.

I was taught by my marketing teacher that repackaging it and making it accessible to the masses was an innovation. Jobs was not, however, an inventor.
