RIP Steve Francis. I wouldn't be surprised at all if in 5 years, we read of him being bankrupt, penniless, and addicted to some illegal drug. Most NBA players start their careers uneducated but given piles of money. They spend it all and by the time they are 40, they are bankrupt. Really sad.
What? Most of them are college students, many go back to graduate, if they didnt already...think about how many make it and how many we hear about being bankrupt...usually it has more to do with their inability to say no to family than being "uneducated".
Thanks v3.0 I spit diet coke on my phone. It was worth it! I have to say, though not a big fan of Stevie the player, I hope this isn't the beginning of an awful downward spiral. Hopefully he gets right and lives well. I don't like seeing anyone fall and not able to pick themselves up.
PI = smarted off to cops, so you get a night in jail. Charges are usually later dropped, PI is a hard charge to prove. It's not illegal to be intoxicated in public, you have to be so drunk that you posed a danger to yourself or others.
Merely going to college does NOT make you educated. For a lot of athletes, college is just high school without the parents.
Maybe I'm wrong but I have the impression that the average NBA player is like Steve Francis, barely literate, unable to function in the real world, and will wind up completely broke, on drugs, and incapacitated. I could be wrong but I don't think I am. These are athletes, not students. You think a guy like Shaq could make it in the real world if he wasn't an NBA player? Not a chance. Kobe? he'd be in jail for raping that woman. Am I being ignorant? I honestly don't think so but maybe I am wrong.
Shaq would probably be in the Military. Likely an MP or something throwing his weight around. Francis had a pretty hard life coming up. He might have been in trouble. I pray he gets it together... although like someone said it's not like he DUIed. He just got drunk and some &@^*%# at the check in counter didn't like his demeanor. I can't tell you how many white & educated dudes I've seen ****ed up on business class, especially after mid week on long flights.
Embarrassing but not that big of a deal. The real deal is the story behind it all. I'm guessing the NBA and especially the Rockets have long known that Stevie had substance abuse issues. It's hard to blame these guys; considering they're human after all. After getting an $80 million contract, how many of you will turn down a fine meal for 3 hours of weight lifting and running on the treadmill? If Stevie had only gotten 2 year $5 million deals, he'd probably still be a baller. These mega-contracts have ruined so many players.
To be honest, if I received an $80 million contract, I wouldn't be partying it up. I'd probably be a lot like Yao - stay at hotel, play video games. workout. read books. And in the off-season, same thing. Just live simply and conservatively.
insert the guy smoking crack here. <a href="http://photobucket.com/images/smoke%20crack" target="_blank"><img src="http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f149/JordanSkatesAlso/crack.jpg" border="0" alt="smoke rocks Pictures, Images and Photos"/></a>
And merely being an athlete doesnt make you uneducated. It was an ignorant thing to say. Even if some of these guys aren't commited to their classes, the whole college experience as an athlete teaches them a lot. Dude, you just went several notches up the ignorance meter. Of all the possible players to pick from, you picked some of the most intelligent, especially Kobe. A lot of these players simply aren't great public speakers for different reasons, but so are many important and succesful people in the world. And how do you even know Francis is "barely" literate? Have you ever seen him function in a classroom? There's plenty of people out there who don't talk like they'd write or how they'd communicate in a classroom or with their boss. I'm not sure where your view comes from, but maybe you need to try and deal with different types of people out in the world. You'll be surprised at what you may find.
agree 100% , saying athelets are uneducated is a generalization and a stereotype....intelligence is a attribute that you actually need to be a good player.
I never understood the charge of "resisting arrest" Why not charge him for the original charge? Most of the time because there wasn't one. Getting arrested for resisting arrest is most of the time getting arrested for annoying a police officer.
Sure the college experience teaches them a lot, if they have a good coach and they are willing to listen. Regardless, we're talking about 'education', and depending on your definition of that it's different than 'life experience'... maybe I'm thinking more about football players, but I know those guys aren't in college to get an education, for the most part... Think about how many current NBA players (or athletes in general) would get decent jobs based on their educational backgrounds if the NBA disappeared today.
