This story sounds like a p*rn plot. - Middle aged white lady in luxury suv creepin? CHECK - Lady wanting to fulfill her fantasy of doing a carpenter? CHECK - Lady pointing at house saying is THAT your house ? CHECK - Lady saying well I live around the corner after no initial invite when she asked if it was YOUR house? CHECK
All the time. Am I mad? Well, for no more than 10 minutes, then I try to forget. The thing is you can't stop the Stereotype by others, but you can control yourself by not admitting the their projection onto you. You probably have your stereotype about white ladies driving Benz too, right? It's a fair world. The most pathetic thing can happen is when you throw away your identity and try hard joining the others, and then project back to your original identity. I don't talk to that kind of people.
i can't believe this thread is still going on just because a lady askedfor somehandyman help. ANd the white cracks are especially nice cracker? really?!
Probably a little bit of both. Not really common sense that if you see someone working on their house you ask if they can work on yours. But hey, what are you going to do. That's just how some people are.
The lady who asked me wasnt white! The cracker references were just stupid. The lady who asked me about cutting yards was though.
This is odd to me. When someone of a different ethnicity asked me for some spare change at the gas pump today... I didn't think it was because it was of my color they asked me. I thought it was because they genuinely needed some help with gas. I wouldn't try and read too much into things... some people are just looking to help a neighbor out by offering them work, all the while saving a buck and/or the hassle of finding someone to do it.
What place in Africa was he from? Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Kenya, Nigeria maybe? South Africa? There are more whites in South Africa than blacks, you know... was he white-complected? I get you. I hate that, too. I don't think minorities or non-whites think "cr*ck*r" is as offensive as it really is, but with the intentions, it is. That comment was uncalled for.
Most people are so inside their own head and preoccupied with their own world that they often aren't that perceptive of their surroundings. I doubt her thought-process took into consideration vehicle placement, attire, and music. She was probably oblivious to everything other than: 1) you were doing handiwork, and 2) she needs someone to do some handiwork for her. Maybe she wanted to know if it was your house because she wanted to know if you were a fellow neighbor who might want to help her out and make some extra money on the side? I don't know, I just think you may be over complicating this. I think any assumptions she made (e.g. maybe he's a handyman; maybe he'd want to take a side-job) were more based on the fact that you were doing handiwork than your race.
She just wanted her door stained, whats the big deal? Maybe she didnt know you did it yourself or something..
I think the lady genuinely needed someone to do her carpentry work. Did I not make that clear? I don't think that race really came into it at all. I generally don't see race in my personal situations until someone has a thread like this that poses the question. Sometimes I think we have to take the situations for what they are... At face value. Is that so hard to do?
I understand that; but you gave an 'example' that I'm referring to. The OP is talking about a stereotype and how it relates to the situation he was in. The stereotype is the whole reason he ponders the question in the topic. You offered a counter in your example...which is why I'm asking what the stereotype is in your offering. Otherwise the example you countered with doesn't relate.
I made it clear. There is a stereotype that some people have money because of skin color, hence why I was asked to help with some spare change for gas. You didn't read that?
