I think there's probably a big difference between Stephon Marbury the person and Stephon Marbury the basketball player. I'll never forget reading about him breaking down into tears and pledging $500,000 in funds in the aftermath of Hurricane Rita.
Thomas said it. He NEVER talked to him when they were on the same team, then he gets an ipod loaded with jay-z songs. wierd.
There's a reason teammates don't like him. And players have been known to put up great numbers while their teams played like crap. It takes more then stats to build a winning club.
You missed the point. He said that the entire time he was there Marbury never said one word to him despite allegedly being friends. Then he gives him that on the way out the door. You bet your life that is weird.
He also bought a car for Leandro Barbosa (when he was with the Suns) after he saw Leandro cycle to the gym. He did donate a million for the Katrina victims too. It just seems that Stephon is cool about parting with some money. Bad team mate or not, he's a good guy.
my point is that some PG put up less assists and points and they dont get bashed around. the only thing i can think of is bad luck with his team selection . i think he trust his teammates and that's how he got his 8APG i watched almost every knicks game this season and i found out there is a bigger ball hog who likes to be "the man" on the team --> Jamal Crawford (*however, he is the best G in knicks, so im not sure if the knicks should let him take all the shots*)
I'm not doubting his integrity as a person, just his persona as a teammate. As someone who has such talent, he's horrible at getting teammates motivated or involved. He's a point guard, and he wants to be the star of the team and as the primary ball handler, shooter, you name it, he wants it. Players play to win, he seems to play for a shining star lighted around him when he plays. He's clashed with teammates and coaches because he couldn't get his way. That goes a long way with people you play with. No one wants to see someone whine and dine their way into stardom while the rest of them are left with games lost and bad stats to add. It's like taking the crumbs after the cookies are eaten.
im sure dave jamerson and matt maloney are great guys too. but they arent getting paid 100million dollars to lead a team to a championship.
he's been in the league for a very long time, its not bad luck with his team selection. cassell went to the clippers. a team that hasnt won a playoff series in 30 years. was that luck? no. leadership.
Like I said, winners can afford to be selfish. Selfish losers get bashed. That is the way of the world of sports. Just because he's averaged a lot of assists does not automatically mean that he trusts his teammates. Stephon has always played the game with an enormous ego. He always thinks he's the best player on the floor, and utter disdain for his teammates abilities at every stop where he wasn't completely overwhelmed by talent (read phoenix). He gets a lot of assists by dominating the ball, but when it comes down to crunch time, he's got sticky fingers. And he's also been the type who, if he passes to his teammates and they miss the shots, he'll be all over them as if that proves his point that he's surrounded by hacks. He has no leadership ability and doesn't look out for the team, just himself.
who gives a crap what an underachiever like tim thomas said about marbury. tim thomas has one good year and his word is gold? This is the same guy who copies a wrestler's mannerism when he hits a shot.
I remember a HBO documentary featuring Telfare years ago mentioned that he and Marlbury dont talk at all, neither do their families. Well, if Marlbury start winning like Nash, all of this would be brushed off. It's really no big deal. The bottom line he is not winning.
i heard that too, that marbury didn't help telair's family out of the projects. they're related. but marbury has a lot intermediate family members iirc, so I'm sure telfair's family is down the list.
To me at least Marbury gave an i-pod to Tim Thomas when he left. You dont b**** about someday giving you a farewell gift. Plus he loaded music on there, shows he spent some time and thoughts on giving the gift. Thomas shouldnt be b****ing about that. From what I heard Marbury is aloof, and ecentric at times, but hey so is Barry Bonds. Shaq doesnt ride team flight to away game, Kobe didnt hang out with teammates home or away. Yao locked him in the room to play video game while the rest of team was having fun in Vegas. As grown man, you just dont talk about other people's way of doing things. It's very childish IMO.
Marbury may say Tim Thomas never talked him during his days as Knicks. This kind of things are two sides.
True, but it seems like everyone's side about Starbury is very negative. So maybe he's OK and everyone else is wrong or everyone else is correct and the guy is a terrible teammate. I remember Starbury admitting he was jealous of KG's huge contract several years ago and that is why he had to leave Minny. He even took shots at KG after leaving. On the It's been downhill for him ever since. Maybe he's an OK guy outside of basketball. I understand he takes care of a lot of family and empathizes with the less fortunate.
The problem is that everyone seems to consistently say bad things about Marbury. No one has anything positive about him anymore. If it were just Tim Thomas complaining, then maybe you have a point but the sheer amount of criticism means at some point you can't just give him the benefit of the doubt.
