Yeah there is this element of fandom that feels that a good coach can get players to do everything and anything. They seem to discount the importance of talent. Any good coach or manager will tell you that the talent is the key. It is the first requirement to building a great organization. Once you have the talent, then you can set plans. Making plans without talent generally leads to failure, because you inevitably will try to fit a square peg into a round hole. Belicheck, Saban, Pop, Riley, Jackson, Kerr, Nurse, Doc, Dungy, Jimmy Johnson, etc., all looked good because of the talent on their teams. When their teams had minimal talent, the results showed it. Johnson was great in Dallas but mediocre to average in Miami. Did he forget how to coach? No! Belicheck missed the playoffs last year. Riley’s last year in Miami was terrible. Jackson missed the playoffs with the lakers after 2004 when the talent was trash. These are all championship coaches, yet had bad seasons when the talent got old or retired.
Silas-"had to ride the two big lineup for longer than he really wanted to, to prove without a shadow of a doubt that this 'is not it'" I don't understand this quote or how it was meant to be interpreted by the og twitter. It makes it sound like he was being strong armed to play that line up.
people are strangely very quiet about this quote…Silas was called all sorts of names with people questioning his intelligence for playing 2 bigs…meanwhile, Stone who was the real mastermind behind these pre-historic lineups, is in the back matrix dodging all forms of criticism
I'll gladly eat crow and take back most of what I said about Silas if it's true that Stone has been the "mastermind" behind the Wood/Theis movement. Regardless of whatever end game Stone had in mind (increase Ls thereby increasing the likelihood of us getting a higher pick, wanting justify/defend the signing of Theis by hoping for better play, etc.) my first/kneejerk reaction is "God is Rafael this crazy/dumb?"
1st we heard that if Silas is fired, Stone would continue to have influence over rotation decisions with the next coach implying that he’s been dictating lineups…then MacMahon basically says Silas was forced to play that Tate, Wood, Theis lineup short of a straight up confession from Stone, I would gladly take this evidence to court and prosecute Stone for stupidity
But how does someone that wears joggers and has a smoking hot wife think that the prehistoric concept of 2 true bigs can work. If we had Adebayo and Karl Anthony Towns on the roster I can see why you would want to try it. But it's Theis. Now it makes sense why Silas kept going back to an empty well. That's something coach Costanza would do to make a point.
He didn’t do any improvements during the win streak. He just played what the stats told him and random Twitter guys knew better. Silas is probably a good guy and great person to be around. He’s not head coach material.
I've criticized both on the basis of inexperience and qualifications, so it isn't surprising to hear that Stone is clueless. Silas gets some points from me if this is the case but he'll need to continue to prove it with results and good lineups to make me a believer.
This is why you give people more time. This is why you dont make reactionary takes. That Rockets twitter space after one of our games was an embarrassment.
The chances are that Silas and the Rockets staff knew all of this before those guys imo. He was forced to play those double big lineups. Even when he first got here Silas said that C Woods advantage was at the 5.
Why do people insist on apologies after every minor accomplishment? Seriously, same coach that got us to 1-15 suddenly needs to be apologized to for a measly 4 winning streak against some of the worst NBA teams? How about he gets to .500 winning % before we apologize for him being terrible so long?
