LONDON, England (CNN) -- God did not create the universe, world-famous physicist Stephen Hawking argues in a new book that aims to banish a divine creator from physics. Hawking says in his book "The Grand Design" that, given the existence of gravity, "the universe can and will create itself from nothing," according to an excerpt published Thursday in The Times of London. "Spontaneous creation is the reason why there is something rather than nothing, why the universe exists, why we exist," he writes in the excerpt. "It is not necessary to invoke God to light the blue touch paper [fuse] and set the universe going," he writes. His book -- as the title suggests -- is an attempt to answer "the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything," he writes, quoting Douglas Adams' cult science fiction romp, "The Hitch-hiker's Guide to the Galaxy." I've heard people say science is based off of scientific fact and religion is a bunch of stories told through time. In a sense you have to have a faith in God. Same thing u must have a faith in science. I'm sure non of us on here has ever proved that the world was round, we based it off of what others have told us that it is. But 99% of mankind hasnt been in space to see that. 99% of us havent done the mathematical equations to prove that theory. but 99% of us believe it to be true because we read it based on someone else's word.
Well now that that is settled. Even if we assume he is the world's smartest man, I'm not sure I would take his word for it. Still an agnostic.
You can make the claim Hawking is the "source" when he proves 0 = 1. Until then, for example, I know with Whom I shall place my trust.
Actually its pretty easy to prove that the Earth is round. Just keep travelling one direction and see if you end up back where you started. Even without doing that you can see that the Earth is round by flying in a plane or climbing a high enough mountain where you can see the curvature of the Earth or even just calling someone on the other side of the Earth and asking them what time it is. If the Earth was flat we would only have one time zone.
