If we're talking about one on one I don't know how the hell people can pick Curry. Iverson would be able to stay step for step against Curry and lock him down. The only defense Curry can play against AI would be to hope that he goes into heatcheck mode more often than not. Building a team? It's hard to say Curry has a heavy advantage considering his supporting cast has an All-Star shooting guard, a former All-Star forward as 6th man, a former #1 draft pick at center, etc. That Finals team Iverson led? It was pretty much AI and Mutombo. In all honesty, this 67-win GS team is probably the weakest 60+ win team I've seen in a long time compared to past teams.
Too early to compare, really, but AI was amazing in his prime. His off-the-court antics overshadow his legacy on the court, so I can see how younger fans couldn't understand how good he was.
Moses Malone I would consider putting up there. I actually never watched Jason Kidd until he was old so I am sorry to exclude him if he was deserving of the list.
AI and it isnt even close. Curry has a great team. If you put Curry on that team that AI carried to the finals, I dont think they would make it to even the Eastern finals. The Warriors are such a stack team that its really unfair to make any comparisons.
He SHOULD have won the MVP the year they gave it to Duncan. Kidd was cold blooded back then...even if the East was garbage during that time.
Anthony Davis is 22 and had a PER over 30...I think he could become pretty close to as good as Hakeem. Curry can't hold prime Iverson's jock strap
It's amazing how many people are still drinking the Iverson kool-aid. Far and away the most overrated player in NBA history. Volume chucker who led a team through one of the worst conference in NBA history and somehow has established a legacy as a winner. His philly teams rarely even had a top 20 offense. They basically had to establish a dominant defense team around him, because no other scorer was capable of playing with his ball hogging ass. Worst thing to ever happen to the NBA.
No doubt Iverson took a terrible team to the finals, but that Eastern Conference was horrific. Not sure how seriously I can take anyone who adamantly picks Iverson in this scenario.
1. No one said his lasting legacy was that he was a winner. The reason why his lone trip to the Finals gets brought up is because his team was garbage offensively. The 2nd best player on that team was Mutombo. This same team beat an Indiana team with Jalen Rose, Reggie Miller, and Jermaine O'Neal. Then they beat Vince Carter in the Semis. Then they took out Ray Allen, Sam Cassell, and Glenn Robinson in the ECF. The East was garbage but the teams Iverson and the Sixers took out weren't cupcakes. 2. He couldn't play with offensive players? How about they didn't give him enough to work with? It was reported recently that instead of drafting Paul Pierce, Philly took Larry Hughes because they made a promise to him. The season after they went to the Finals? They got 34 y/o Derrick Coleman and he gave them 15/9. Next year they bring in Keith Van Horn. Year after that? Glenn Robinson. Lest we forget, when he finally had a good player next to him in Denver with Melo, Iverson career highs in FG% and averaged 7 assists a game. 3. Who's overrating him in this thread? The OP threw out a scenario and we, the people that actually watched both players play, wholeheartedly pick Iverson despite his shortcomings. What has Steph Curry done this season that will be remembered in 10-15 years? In all honesty, his production this season isn't that much better than last year's. Curry's getting recognition because his TEAM won 67 games with the most depth a team has had in a long time.
Iverson's mvp season was a good 5 years after they changed the hand check rule. He also averaged 10 ft's a game that year, the same as Harden this year. I think you're confusing physicality with mediocre play. They even changed a rule after that season to call less touch fouls after his mvp season, if I remember correctly.
Disagree. If Iverson played today he would live at the free throw line. AI might have been a chucker but he took punishment when he drove the ball and he didn't always get the call.
Curry. He practices his 3pt shooting. Seriously, I'd take Curry over Iverson any day. He can play with other stars and be effective. Iverson couldn't.
Depends what's being asked. 1 on 1 - AI. In his prime, his speed and quickness made the other 9 guys on the court look like they were running in mud. Build a team around - Curry, as he gets his teammates involved. Although AI was able to carry a very bad team to the finals single-handedly.
This. . . . . . If people could put Curry on his *ss like they did Iverson . . . . Curry would not last long The league was more rough and tumble then Rocket River
I was too young to get to see Iverson play, but I love looking at stats and comparing players. From Iverson's stats, his best season was the 05-06 season 33.0 points, 7.4 assist, 3.2 rebounds, 1.9 steals, shooting 45/32/81 in 43 minutes per game Curry 23.8 points, 7.7 assist, 4.3 rebounds, 2.0 steals, shooting 49/44/91 in 33 minutes per game So Iverson scoring 10 more points is obviously a big deal, Iverson playing 10 minuter more per game is a big deal, Curry is supremely more efficient then Iverson, and his advance stats blow him out the water. So when it comes to stats Curry is better, but I personally believe what Iverson did was probably more amazing /special to watch because he was actually playing that extra 10 minutes, scoring that extra 10 points because his team needed, Curry isn't.
