If JVG takes the job there, I bet he brings in Battier in some way. Those two have huge respect for eachother, and Battier of course is loved in Memphis.

    Just for kicks.

If JVG is hired and Battier became the assistant...

Has there ever been a player/coach in the NBA and is it even allowed?

Yes and technically yes. You can't really keep a player from coaching. As long as he has the respect, he'll be heard.

You mean the team that just fired the coach of the year and then another nice coach?

And the most recent was Dave Cowens back in 1979.

The owner can of course replace a guy at any time, but if he is hiring JVG for the "full control" job as reported, his contract will likely be such that the owner, Robert Pera, will have to think really hard before firing him.

For one thing, he'd be Robert Pera's "guy." Judging by what I read, the now fired CEO Jason Levien was sort of the guy trying to find investors to buy the team with Levien in charge, and Levien was the guy who picked all the bball operations people. JVG, if hired and entrusted with authority, will be Pera's pick, and Pera is likely to give him more leeway to execute a plan.

Also, if this job is paying him nearly the kind of money that SVG is getting from Detroit. The owner will have to hesitate about firing him and having to pay both him and a replacement.

Actually, not anymore. You can't do this anymore because it could become a salary cap loophole. For instance, the Heat could make Lebron a player-coach and pay him only $5 million as a player and $15 million as a coach.

I didn't mean officially though. Technically, many of these old vets are in player-coach roles. Unless he meant a player being head coach, but I assumed he was referring to Battier playing for JVG and still coaching these guys.

I still don't see him coaching any team other than the Rockets until his girls get out of high school. The difference between him and his brother is that Jeff can make millions as a part time announcer.

Yes...at the end of the Celtic's Dynasty, Bill Russell succeeded Red Auerbach. As both a player and coach. he won the last 2 of their 11 titles. Red won the first 9, Russell with the last 2.

Looks like Joerger is staying. Hey Jeff, why don't you take an Assistant Coaching job with us so are defense doesn't suck anymore? You get to coach for the city you love and you don't have the headache of being responsible for every win or loss, that's McHale's job.

Memphis as it's built would be a great fit for JVG's defensive style.

JVG deserves it. I wish Les and Morey didn't just let him walk like that.
