    The joke is a joke.

I guess I don't get their humor and I do like many of their songs. The great thing about this is that no one has to give a crap. They do it, because it's fun for them and their fans. That's not too bad, is it?

Luke Wilson is actually a decent actor (IMO). Whenever I see Owen in a movie, I'll say, "There's Owen". Then someone will respond with, "No, that's Hansel", or "No, that's Roy O'Bannon".

    Bullsh!t!!!

It's Owen Wilson. It's always Owen Wilson. He only knows how to act out one type of character (Surfer Dude) and that's it.

The funny thing is that I still find him amusing.

    Are you confused yet?

Man, I'm shocked you guys thought this was serious. The guys in Steely Dan have been doing stuff like this for year. I, for one, found it hilarious. Maybe it's the whole Andrea Yates thing, but you guys need to put down the serious soda and take a bite of the silly sandwich, bros. :)

Steely Dan is a bunch of washed up scrubs that don't matter. Many of the movies the Wilson's are putting out are FAR better than anything this crappy band has ever done.

    I have no clue.

I don't really hate the guys, or even dislike them, I guess I'm just tired. :p

Dude, you called it "childish" and told them to take it up with Owen privately. You obviously missed the point, for whatever reason, so don't take it out on me or the band that you didn't get it.

Wow, I didn't expect this mildly humorous letter to generate so much heat. For the record, if someone plays a harmless prank, and you mistake it for something serious, the correct response is- "Ooops", or silence.

I recently saw a concert on an HD channel and they could still kicked ass. They are far from washed up.

If you don't like the style of music, that's cool.

The valley girl style of type seemed out of place, but then I've never heard these guys talk before. Perhaps that's just part of the act. Good for them to have some fun in their golden years.

Steely Dan made great music 20-30 years ago.

I saw them once in concert, and it was like listening to their records.

If they were relevant, they wouldn't be resorting to publicity stunts.

Perhaps "kicked ass" was a strong word. They are Steely Dan. It would have been better if I had some weed while watching...

and some doritos... and a pepsi...

and cookies and cream ice cream...

Before this, the last time I heard anything about Steely Dan was a spoof on Reno 911.

Name one band from 20-30 years ago that is "relevant." They've all been marginalized. I mean, nobody's putting better records out, in any genre, than Bob Dylan right now -- and he's about as "relevant" as what my cat just did in his little red tray.

We can argue until we're blue in the face and pretend that it's 1979, but at the end of the day, a new Dylan album or McCartney tour or whatever means about as much as David Lee Roth doing bluegrass in the big picture. It's all going to the same group of people who will like/dislike no matter what. No, nobody will be listening to Lance Bass albums in 20-30 years, but it hardly changes anything. CSNY sell out a stadium regardless of whether or not Neil puts out an album called "Impeach ..." or "Salute the President."

EDIT: And, once again, if this is a "publicity stunt," then the band has been creating "publicity stunts" through their website once a month for the last 12 years -- even when they have no album or tour to promote.

Probably because during his movies you wonder how you'd have to punch a guy to make his nose like Owen's.

Just another reason not to listen to Steely Dan. Maybe they should open their shows with a reading?

I'll put "reading what Don and Walt of Steely Dan" have to say and joke about on my list of things to do...right below "tossing a ball in the air".

Its like an April fools joke that worked perfectly....and now the ones who fell for it (me included) can't laugh at themselves.

The radio station here (vancouver) was frothing away at the letter -- fell for it hook, line and sinker.

I have new respect for Steely Dan. (but named after a dildo  ).

Wilson doesn't know Steely Dan and Dupree is no rip-off

    Associated Press

LOS ANGELES — Owen Wilson has denied any connection between his new movie, You, Me and Dupree, and '70s supergroup Steely Dan, a spokesman for the actor said Friday.

The band recently posted a letter on their Web site claiming that Wilson's Dupree character was based on their Grammy-winning song, Cousin Dupree, about a couch-hopping houseguest.

In a statement released by his spokeswoman, Ina Treciokas, Wilson said: "I have never heard the song Cousin Dupree and I don't even know who this gentleman, Mr. Steely Dan, is. I hope this helps to clear things up and I can get back to concentrating on my new movie, HEY 19."

Larry Solters, a spokesman for the band's management company, did not immediately return a call for comment.

Steely Dan released a string of hits in the '70s, including Hey Nineteen, Reeling in the Years and Rikki Don't Lose That Number.

"There are some pretty heavy people who are upset about this whole thing and we can't guarantee what kind of heat little Owen may be bringing down on himself," band leaders Walter Becker and Donald Fagen wrote in the letter.

The band asked Wilson, 37, to appear at a concert to apologize to their fans.

You, Me and Dupree co-stars Kate Hudson and Matt Dillon as a newlywed couple annoyed by Dupree, a friend who crashes on their couch.

In 2001, Cousin Dupree won a Grammy for best pop performance by a duo or group from Steely Dan's album Two Against Nature, which snagged album of the year.

What an IDIOT!!! I can't believe that Owen Wilson doesn't even know that Steely Dan is the name of a band, not a person!!! AND he's making another movie that rips off one of their songs!!! Can this guy be a bigger tool?

What? What's that you say? He was just joking around? Are you sure?

    oops.
