that's kind of shane's specialty though ... he helps the best players play better by filling in the gaps. he especially works well with rim protectors.

Exactly. Battier makes players better and more likable. Gasol, Randolph and company are now 150% more likable than before Battier joined them. Rudy Gay was a likable fellow himself, but he hasn't learned how to make teammates more likable.

In China, Yao Ming is highly liked by the people for having been teammates with Battier.

Its interesting because ish smith seems to have had the same exact effect on all of those stats to the grizzles team. Funny way stats like this can be taken.

If you look hard enough for anything your bound to find it.

Except Battier didn't look any better while with the Grizzlies.

The mere fact we're not paying Rudy Gay 20M a year for the next 5 years should answer that question.

If LeBron had Battier on his team, the whole world would have been rooting against Dallas.

the entire grizzlies team is easily 220% more likeable with battier. 150% is the league average likeability with shane playing.

It works the other way around too. If the bigs weren't there, his intangibles wouldn't be so effective. Gasol and Zach demanded a lot of attention, which made things easier for Shane. These stats don't take that into account.

Someone needs a harsh dose of reality. Rudy Gay's current contract NEVER exceeds $19M and that is not until the LAST year of the contract. Currently, he will make a whopping $3M more than Kevin Martin for the 2011-12 season. And you can bet your arse that...even if the Rockets were "saddled" with the contract...it would return a helluva more than Thabeet in a trade.

Rudy Gay could definitely be traded for the Cavs' #4 pick and probably for Minny's #2.

Personally, I had no problem with the Gay-Battier trade, but it would be nice to have those options right now.

I think a good way to put it, if the reports about him are true, is that Battier is like the NFL LB/safety that calls the defensive plays. His presence allows for a more efficiently run defense. One where everyone can work together well.

In many ways, Battier is like a coach. He can bring out the best in players, but those players have to have the required quality to be good in the first place. i.e. he can't make Jordan Hill good on D because Hill doesn't have the BBIQ to pick up his instructions. But Yao probably benefited a lot from such things.

Thabeet's contract runs out next season, doesn't matter if Thabeet himself is useless as he suddenly becomes a 5M expiring contract next season which can be used for trades or to clear capspace.

Ok fine, Rudy Gay doesn't make 20M this year, he makes 13M next which will then increase all the way to 19M in his fifth year. Why's that a good thing? That's like having cancer and being told by a doctor they only have to take one of your balls out instead of two. Battier didn't make the Grizllies team significantly better than when Gay was at the sf spot, but then he didn't make it worse either, which is sad conidering the Grizzlies are paying Battier half of what they paid Gay, and will continue to pay Gay for the next 5 years. He's the new generation of Rashard Lewis/Gilbert Arenas overpaid poison pill contract.

In other words, when he's on a team with quality players, that team will usually win some games. But, whens he's on a team with poor players, that team will probably lose more games. So actually, he doesn't really make a difference at all. Why do so many people spend so much time trying to rationalize his effectiveness on the court??? He's a mediocre NBA player and a nice guy. He's not any teams missing piece.

I think the Grizz were something like 14-3 before Battier even got there. They were already playing out of their minds. Battier conveniently joined a team that had already figured things out and was on the upswing.

I never understood using Gay's contract as justification for the Battier trade -- talk about desperation. There's a reason he got that contract.. he's much better than Shane ever was.
